Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 15th March, 2022

15th March, 2022.

Shopping!

I’ve got to admit, today’s the first day — for a while — that I’ve had a chance to go shopping.

I think I need to do goulash: so I’m going to need mushrooms, at least.

Oh …

I got back unscathed from yesterday’s Restart meeting: after I got there, late.

Before it or not?   A freight train got stuck between Chelmsford and Hatfield Peveral.

At any rate … ?

My case worker’s suggested a couple of forty week courses: in IT and Business administration.

We’ll have to see what happens, there.

The possible venues are quite some distance away: and there’s a distinct possibly some of the software may be Windows only.

Even though I’d get the course for free?

I suspect there may be out-of-pocket expenses I can’t afford.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ and putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        15th March, 1943, saw Nazi Germany capture Kharkov: from its Soviet captors.   Kharkov is now better known how?

Q2)        More to the point? Kharkov is in which Eastern European country?

Q3)        Cricket’s first Test match started: on 15th March, 1877.   Between England and who: Australia, India or the West Indies?

Q4)        15th March was — according to the Ancient Romans — the Ides of March.   Which Ancient Roman general was assassinated on the Ides of March, 44BC: Octavianus, Claudius or Julius Caesar?

Q5)        Finally … ?   15th March, 2016, saw the death of producer, and voice actress, Sylvia Anderson.   She voiced which character in Thunderbirds: Tin-Tin, Grandma or Lady Penelope?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        14th March is what day: eta day, beta day or pi day?
A1)        Pi Day.   (Eta Beta Pi … ?   No … ?   Please yourselves …)

Q2)        14th March is 1 Chet.   In other words, it’s New Year’s day to whom: Jews, Hindus or Sikhs?
A2)        Sikhs.

Q3)        Mike Lazaridis was born on 14th March, 1961.   He’s the man who founded the company that makes what: the iPhone, the BlackBerry or the Galaxy Four?
A3)        The BlackBerry.

Q4)        Albert Einstein was born on 14th March, 1879.   He received a Nobel Prize in Physics, in 1921.   For his paper about what: Special Relativity, General Relativity, Brownian motion or the photoelectric effect?
A4)        The photoelectric effect.

Q5)        Finally … ?   The US Gold Standard Act was approved on 14th March, 1900.   It valued the dollar at approximately how much gold: 1.5 grams, 2.5 grams or 3.5 grams?
A5)        1.5 grams.   (To be precise, it valued a dollar at 25⁸⁄₁₀th grains, at ninety per cent purity. So you know … )
Here’s a thought …
“Music is my therapy and my straitjacket.   Music keeps me sane and keeps my mind on something.   It’s fragile up there.”
will.i.am, born March 15, 1975.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

The quizmaster’s decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Well, yeah: but I think that’s why Albert got the Prize, Olga.   He was one of the few people that could think about it!   I had trouble read the Wikipedia entry’s first paragraph.   Can you remind me to look up the Simple English Wikipedia entry at some point?
And you’re right: the succession of people I’ve spoken to at the Friday weight loss meeting have telling me about dark chocolate for weeks!   But you knew that.   I’m semi-seriously wondering if there’s a twelve step group for chocolate addicts!   (It sounds like you father would’ve appreciated it!)
Good luck with the weather: and with classes.   (I’m just wondering what Jordi would make of the phrase, ‘12-step group’ … !)

        Hello, Mum!

I’ll keep my eyes peeled, Debbi: it sound like it could be interesting … !   (RUR’s famous for — if nothing else — introducing the word ‘robot’ to the English language.   From what I remember, it’s from a Czech word that means ‘forced labour.’)

I hope the courses come in handy and at no cost if you eventually have to do them. One never knows with these things, but I guess it gives work to some people (the ones who facilitate the course at the very least)!
I hope you manage to do your shopping. Here it is terribly windy.
Jordi... As he's going on a short break to London next month, I'm going to make sure I find some relevant material to listen to and read (not too complicated).
