Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 16-5-2023 — International Day of Light.

16th May, 2023: International Day of Light.

Right … it’s officially Tuesday!   Which means I’ve got my nephew, Jude, over, later.

Videos will — as ever — get made.

Assuming he remembers the GoPro!   :D

At any rate … ?   And outside of that … ?

I’m in the process of trying to claim Personal Independence Payments, or PIP.

The online form … ?

Is due to be submitted by the 19th of this month.

I’d better hurry up, hadn’t I … ?

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

The day also saw Trevor§ leaving us a message.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        16th May is the International Day of Light.   According to which UN body: UNESCO, the WHO or UNICEF?

Q2)        The date was chosen to mark Theodore Maiman’s first test firing of what: the machine gun, laser, or CD?

Q3)        299,792,458 metres per second is the what of light in a vacuum?

Q4)        Which ‘O’ is the study of light: oceanography, optics or oenology?
Q5)        Finally … ?   Refraction is what happens when light passes through a surface between two transparent materials. Refraction causes the light to what: bend, burp or bite?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        15th May is the Roman Catholic feast day of Peter, Andrew, Paul and whom: Delicia, Denise or Deborah?
A1)        Denise.   (As a group?   They sound like a 1960s folk band.   And, apparently?   Denise is invoked against motorbike accidents.)

Q2)        According to the United Nations?   According to the United Nations, 15th May is the International Day of what: families, friends or fundamentalists?
A2)        International Day of Families.

Q3)        Nakba Day is marked on 15th May.   By whom: the Roma, Palestinian or LGBTQI+ communities?
A3)        By many Palestinian communities.

Q4)        15th May, 1934, saw a coup take place: led by the Prime Minister.   The Prime Minister of where: Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia?
A4)        Latvia.   (Apparently, it was was Wikipedia calls a self-coup: a coup by a legally elected leader, trying to maintain power by illegal means.   Not something US presidents do … obviously …)

Q5)        Finally … ?   Which US city was founded on 15th May, 1905: New York, Chicago or Las Vegas?
A5)        Las Vegas.   Cue the music.
Here’s a thought …
“At the darkest moment comes the light.”
The Power of Myth, by Joseph Campbell.
And some music …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Yeah, that’s sounds about right, Olga.   I seem to remember reading the same thing about motorbike teams doing the same sort of thing: having female members as they are/were lighter, rather than as an equality issue.   And the helmets are sensible.   I’m just not surprised some groups were iffy about it.   I guessing it was the male members doing the coupling, is that right … ?
Sounds like that five-year-old was very bossy!   I can’t think WHO that sounds like!

Hello, Mum!   (It was Denise, rather than Delicia: Delicia was the other name of Patricia the Stripper!)

Oh, I know what you mean, Debbi!!   The amount of sheer stuff sitting around in just my downloads folder is ridiculous.   But that’s why I mentioned shifting those libraries to an external drive.   It frees up room.   (Oh … and any songs you’ve bought from iTunes can usually be downloaded for a long time!)
And don’t worry: you’ve been doing fine for the past few years: I expect nothing different for the next few!   (He says!)

§        Happy Birthday, Trevor!   You DO realise today is the 80th anniversary of the Dambuster raid … ?   Apparently, there’s a flypast, due.

Have fun today with your nephew. And good luck with the application. Don't procrastinate, as we know everybody tends to leave these things to the last minute and then the web collapses.

Paul coming from Lincolnshire (Bomber county) i knew and I also know that they are thinking of moving the grave of a certain dog so that they can put illegal immegrants into the old RAF station.
The Lancaster fly past this evening will cover most of North Lincolnshire. I do not know if they have a spare bomb that they can drop as they pass over Grimsby.

I'm hanging in there! :)

At some point, I'll probably do just what you said.

1. UNESCO
2. laser
3. speed
4. optics
5. bend (I'm pretty sure they don't burp)

These questions reminded me of a course I took ages ago. Back when I actually thought about being a physicist. Can you believe?

I probably would've ended up writing sci-fi. :)

But the course was really interesting. It was called "The Physics of Art" or something like that. We got into the business of additive vs. subtractive color. And other things I can barely recall now. :)
