Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 28-4-2024 — Health and Safety

28th April, 2024: Health and Safety.

Right then … Sunday …

It’s Sunday … and you know it … !

Ahem!

You can tell it’s going to be an ever so slightly boring day, can’t you … ?

Ho … hum!

~≈🍄‍🟫≈~

Did you know the UK’s holding local elections, this Thursday?

The UK’s holding local elections on Thursday: for both local councils, and the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner*.

It looks like there’s a Green candidate standing in my ward, this time.

Who I’m happy to vote for.

If they hadn’t?   I’d’ve done my usual thing: and spoilt my vote.

Which, to be frank?   Is what I’m going to do in the PFCC vote.

There’s no-one on that ballot I want to vote for.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw OlgaMum§ and Debbi¶ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        28th April is the World Day for Health and Safety at … where?

Q2)        The UK’s Health and Safety body is the Health and Safety … what?

Q3)        That UK agency is based where: Bootle, Chelmsford or Derby?

Q4)        The SafeWork programme promotes health and safety.   It’s run by which UN agency: the WHO, the ILO or the ITU … ?

Q5)        Finally … ?   In the UK, the COSHH regulations are the Control Of what Hazardous to Health?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        President Lincoln suspended the writ of Habeas Corpus on 27th April, 1861.   Habeas Corpus means you cannot be what without a reason: imprisoned, hospitalised or fired?
A1)        Imprisoned.   Speaking as a layman?   The Simple English Wikipedia entry on Habeas Corpus is far more readable!

Q2)        27th April is Independence Day.   Where: France, the USA or Sierra Leone?
A2)        Sierra Leone.

Q3)        27th April is Independence Day.   Where: Germany, the United Arab Emirates or Togo?
A3)        Togo.

Q4)        “Boys Keep Swinging” was released on 27th April, 1979.   By which British singer?
A4)        David Bowie.

Q5)        Finally … ?   The Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Reunification was signed on 27th April, 2018.   The Declaration was supposed to bring an end to what: the Vietnam War, the Korean War or the War of Jenkins’ Ear?
A5)        The Korean War.
Here’s a thought …

“The annual World Day for Safety and Health [ … ] on 28 April promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.”
From the UN web page about the Day.

And another …

“There were no public health laws in Ankh-Morpork. It would be like installing smoke detectors in Hell.”
From Feet of Clay, by Terry Pratchett.

And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        What does a Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner do, exactly?   Because you could argue — from the way the title is worded — that they’re there to commission crime†, and start fires.   Don’t look at me, I only notice these things.

It’s one way of giving the police something to do.

Ah HA!   I’m Pete, again, Olga!   :D   Remind me to mention dicky birds!   (It was budgerigars, when I was a kid: and there were hand gestures!)

§        Hello, Mum!

¶        It’s a good tune, Debbi: but I still think Absolute Beginners is the best thing he ever did!

Q3) Bootle

Q4) the ILO

Q5) Substances
Sorry once again. I'm sure I must have called Pete Paul at some point as well. I finished reading the children's stories and have a meeting on Thursday to discuss with the other members of the jury. I had to read stories from children in two age groups, 6 to 8 and 8 to 10, and must say the 6 to 8 came up with some cracking stories. (One where all the characters were vegetables and starts with the memorable line: "Em dic Pinxo i soc un cogombre" (My name is Pinxo and I am a cucumber" I adore. His sister is an aubergine, his best friend is a lettuce (and the lettuce is pretty clever, I must say).

Sounds like COSHH is the UK equivalent of OSHA here. Maybe. :)
