Sunday 8 September 2024

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 8-9-2024 — Asturias.

8th September, 2024: Asturias.

Right then … it’s officially Sunday.

And we had a thunderstorm over night.

I wish I’d tried to record that: it would’ve been a spectacular thing to show you.

But … ?

Well, I was in bed at the time!

~≈⚡️≈~

At any rate … ?

I caught a TV show, on Friday.

Or, at least, caught the first episode of the recently released The Celestial Toymaker.

It’s a lot better than I thought it would be: although — as I say in my review — I’m not totally impressed with the design work.

We’ll have to see how the next few episodes pan out.

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        8th September is a day that celebrates Asturias.   Asturias is an autonomous community, where: Spain, Portugal or France?

Q2)        Modern Asturias is a what: principality, duchy or archduchy?

Q3)        What’s the region’s official language?

Q4)        Fabada asturiana is an Asturian what: stew, soup or loaf?

Q5)        Finally … ?   The Gaita asturiana is a what: guitar, bagpipe or trumpet?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        The Guo Huaiyi rebellion started on 7th September, 1652.   On which island: Taiwan, Java or Kyushu?
A1)        Taiwan.

Q2)        7th September is the UN sponsored World Duchenne Awareness Day. Duchenne’s is a form of what: lung cancer, muscular dystrophy or poliomyelitis?
A2)        Muscular dystrophy.   (It affected an old friend’s grandson: and, I’m told, can be devastating.)

Q3)        Boston was founded on 7th September.   It’s in which US state: Texas, Massachusetts or California?
A3)        Massachusetts.

Q4)        The Boxer Protocol was signed on 7th September, 1901.   It ended a rebellion, in what’s now where: Japan, China or Vietnam?
A4)        China.

Q5)        Finally … ?   VTV launched on 7th September, 1970.   It’s which country’s national broadcaster: Vanuatu, Vatican City, Venezuela or Vietnam?
A5)        Vietnam.
Here’s a fact …
“Divided into eight comarcas (counties), the autonomous community of Asturias is bordered by Cantabria to the east, by León (Castile and León) to the south, by Lugo (Galicia) to the west, and by the Cantabrian sea to the north.”
From the Wikipedia entry on Asturias.
And an Asturias hymn …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!

Yes, that was mentioned in the BBC reports, Olga: the shooter was being charged as an adult but — because of his age — wouldn’t qualify for a death sentence.   Make what you will of that.
(That’s a thought: didn’t you say your father was Asturian, Olga?   Or Valencian?   I know you’ve mentioned … !)

‡        Cheers, Debbi, I’ll book mark it, and sign up, now.   (It’s funny how the Guardian gets around.   And did you know it’s got a reputation for typos?)

Q1) Spain

Q2) Principality

Q3) Spanish (Not sure how many people speak Bable, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard it spoken, although my father was from Galicia, right next to Asturias, but I have never visited, although I’d like to)

Q4) Stew (The versions I have tried were pretty good, although as I don’t eat meat products now and haven’t eaten them for quite a while, I can’t say I’ve tried it recently).

Q5) A bagpipe (that’s very typical of Galicia as well, although I don’t know anybody who plays it. There is a Galician centre about 10 minutes from our house here, and sometimes when we walk by, we can hear them rehearsing their bagpipes).
Galician. My father was gallego (from Galicia), right next, to the West, of Asturias. They always said "gallegos y asturianos, primos-hermanos" (that is gallegos (people from Galicia) and asturianos (from Asturias) are first-cousins. Similar landscapes, although, as I said, I'm not sure about the similarities in language, because I don't think I've ever heard it spoken, or not that I recall.
Yes, we shall see what happens with the trial.
Ah, and good luck with the article you are working on. It is worth investing time in it. I am sure it will be useful to many people.
We've had a fair amount of rain overnight, and we have an orange warning in place for rain, but only until 3 pm, although right now (13:19) it's raining again.
I was quite lucky, because I've been on one of the monthly organised walks I join when I can, and although we had some rain at the very beginning, it held out for the rest of the walk. Considering we were walking up a steep hill, with plenty of stones and loose soil, it was lucky.
