The Daily Teaser — 2-8-2012

AAAAAAAAARRRGGGHHH … !

Remember me saying, yesterday, I was expecting a visit from an engineer, who’d be checking out my boiler … ?

That was a laugh … !

The chap eventually turned up, just after eleven, and checked everything out — including the knob twiddling I’d managed to do, based on advise from previous visits — and pronounced it all fine.

This morning, or course, I’ve got no heating, I’m currently filling the bath with a kettle, and have a little light on the boiler telling me there’s a blocked flue/drain.

Ho-hum.

I think I’m going to be having another word with my landlord, in a bit …

Let’s get moving on, shall we … ?

Yes, let’s … !

‹‹·››

Yesterday’s Teaser saw both Trevor*‡ and Debbiª‡ putting in their answers: with both scoring 5 out of 5, it also saw Trevor running a question past yours truly, and Debbi congratulating Team GB on one of the golds they bagged, yesterday.

Let’s see how they — and you — do with today’s questions, shall we?   Here they are, along with the ‘How To’, License and video …

Q1) 2nd August, 1873, saw the Clay Street Hill Railroad start operating the world’s first cable car: in which US city … ?
Q2) More to the point, cable cars run on cables: trams run on what … ?
Q3) 2nd August, 1918, saw Japan deploy troops to which part of Russia, near the end of World War 1 … ?
Q4) 2nd August, 1932, saw the discovery of the antimatter version of the electron: what’s it called … ?
Q5) 2nd August, 1923, saw Calvin Coolidge become the US president on the death of his predecessor.   What was his predecessor’s name … ?
Q6) And finally … 2nd August, 1939, saw Albert Einstein and Leó Szilárd write a letter to the US president, to urge the building of the A Bomb: who was that president … ?
And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 1st August, 1498, saw explorer, Christopher Columbus become the first European to visit what is now which South American country … ?
A1) Venezuela.
Q2) 1st August, 1960, saw the Kingdom of Dahomey declare its independence from which European country … ?
A2) France.
Q3) More to the point, how is Dahomey now known … ?
A3) Benin.
Q4) 1st August, 1976, saw which F1 driver in a critical condition, after a crash … ?
A4) Niki Lauda.   (“Who’s that famous racing driver, Niki … ?”   “Lauda”.   “WHO’S THAT FAMOUS RACING DRIVER … ”)
Q5) And finally … 1st August, 1981 saw MTV makes it’s debut on US TV.   In which year did it make its UK debut … ?
A5) 1997.
Enjoy those, everyone.

I’ll leave you with a tune from late Dutch singer, Ede Staal, who’s birthday it was, today.

And a quote from Jack Warner …
“I have a theory of relatives, too. Don’t hire ’em.”Jack L Warner August 2, 1892 – September 9, 1978
Oh, and then there’s THIS little beauty …

*        Well, like I said, yesterday, Trevor, F1’s usually not my thing: but I’m guessing Piers Courage …

ª        Actually, it’s two, by now, Debbi: Bradley Wiggins — who won this year’s Tour De France — bagged one in the Time Trials.

‡        Oh, the Series 7 trailer … ?   Ahem … !

That's awesome, Paul. :) I'll confess I haven't been keeping strict track of the events.

I've been so involved in writing and getting my crowdsourcing project ready.

Did you see the news about my screenplay making the quarterfinal cut in Scriptapalooza? According to Scott Clevenger, who works in the business, that's a real achievement in itself. Here's hoping maybe I'll advance to the next level. Cross your fingers. :)
