The Daily Teaser — 5-3-2013: Saint Piran’s Day

You know, it HAS to be said: I had something of a quiet one, yesterday.

Despite the fact it was me birthday.

Not that I’m complaining: it gave me the chance to play with my new toy.

Just in case you DIDN’t know … ?   I got given an iPod dock: and one that’s capable of being hooked into my TV.

Which meant I spent most of last night watching  of the Christopher Ecclestone series of Dr Who.

Fun, fun, fun … !

~~≈≈~~

Yesterday’s Teaser saw both Nina and Debbi putting in their answers: with both wishing me a Happy Birthday* it ALSO saw both bagging 7 out of 7.

Let’s see how they — and you — do with today’s questions.

Here they are, along with the ‘How To’, License and video

Q1) 5th March is the feast day of Saint Piran: the patron saint of which English county … ?
Q2) Saint Piran is ALSO the patron saint of people who mine … what … ?
Q3) The language spoken in that county is a version of what: English, Celtic or French … ?
Q4) If one of the locals tells you they’re having an ‘oggie’, what are they eating … ?
Q5) In this county’s language, what item of clothing is — or are — your ‘lavrek byhan’ … ?
Q6) And finally … Britain’s most southerly point is in Saint Piran’s county: and is named for which type of animal … ?
And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 4th March, 1933, saw Franklin Delano Roosevelt inaugurated as US President: what had he used as his campaign song … ?
A1) Happy Days Are Here Again.
Q2) More to the point, how many FULL terms did he serve as President … ?
A2) Three.   (He died in 1945 of a stroke, during the first year of his fourth term in office.)
Q3) 4th March, 1675, saw John Flamsteed named as the Royal Astronomer: by which King … ?
A3) Charles 2nd.
Q4) 4th March, 2012, saw who elected as President of Russia … ?
A4) Vladimir Putin.   (One of my neighbours is Russian: from the little she’s said over the years, describing him as divisive would be putting it politely.)
Q5) 4th March, 1923, saw the birth of noted TV presenter and amateur astronomer, Sir Patrick Moore.   What was the name of the TV show he presented for many years … ?
A5) The Sky At Night.
Q6) More to the point, what was the name of the star catalogue he created … ?
A6) The Caldwell Catalogue.   (He also created the series of Moon maps used by both NASA and the Soviet Space Agency in their early lunar explorations.)
Q7) And finally … 4th March, 1985, saw the US Food and Drug Administration approve a blood test for which disease … ?
A7) HIV/AIDS.
I’ll leave you with The Flora Dance: a tune traditional to Saint Piran’s county …

And with this quote from Sir Humphry Davy: again, another resident …
“Nothing is so fatal to the progress of the human mind as to suppose that our views of science are ultimate”
Sir Humphry Davy 17 December 1778 – 29 May 1829
Enjoy the day … !

*        Thanks, ladies!   That put a shine on my day … !   (And Nina … ?   You didn’t get ’em mixed up.   Oh, Debbi, remind me to look out for that … !)
