Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10th September, 2018

10th September, 2018.

Yes: my intro video, today, sees me confessing I almost mixed my days up.

Which is not something to confess to, if, like me, you write blogposts themed around what day it is.

It could have been worse, I could’ve opened like this …

Which could’ve been worse …

As a quick thought … ?

I noticed this piece on the BBC’s new site, the other day.

It explains how researchers have found that using renewable energy sources — specifically, solar panels and wind farms — could alter the rainfall patterns in arid dry deserts like the Sahara: making them greener areas, that potentially could be used as valuable farmland.

Personally?

I’m no scientist, but think that could be a good thing: after all, with an increasing population, anything that lets us grow more food would be useful.

My first thought, though?

Dune fan that I am, I quietly thought the area, home of the tribal people that supposedly were the inspiration for the novel’s Fremen …

Would get dozens of them, running over a dune, yelling ‘Muad’Dib.’

What CAN I tell you?

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with Olga scoring five out of five and Debbi on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 10th September, 1918 — a century ago, today — saw Russian’s Red Army capture which city?
Q2) During the what: First World War, Russian Civil War or Ukrainian War of Independence?
Q3) 10th September, 1977, saw the execution — in France — of Hamida Djandoubi: on charges of murder.   He was the last person in France to be executed with what?
Q4) Abebe Bikila became the first sub-Saharan African to win Olympic gold: on 10th September, 1960.   He won it for successfully coming first in which type of race?
Q5) 10th September, 1989, saw the birth of footballer, Lee Sawyer.   His last matches, in 2016, were for which obscure side?
Q6) Finally … ?   10th September, 1984, saw the birth of actor, Harry Treadaway.   Who’s his acting twin brother?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 9th September is Steak au poivre Day in the US.   Steak au poivre is a steak in what sauce?
Q2) 9th September, 1968, saw the birth of actress, Julia Sawalha.   In which comedy series does she play Saffron Monsoon?
Q3) A Report released on 9th September, 1999, recommended that what should be reformed: the CBI, RUC or KGB?
A3) The Royal Ulster Constabulary, or RUC: the then police force of Northern Ireland.
Q4) Britain’s current monarch became Britain’s longest running monarch: on 9th September, 2015.    Who is she?
A4) The Queen, Elizabeth 2nd.
Q5) Finally … 9th September is the date of Chrysanthemum Festival, in Japan.   In China, and other Asian nations, it’s the Double what Festival?
A5) The Double Ninth Festival.
Here’s a thought …
“The road to success is always under construction.”
Arnold Palmer, September 10, 1929 – September 25, 2016.
And a given it’s the birthday of Johhny Fingers, the pianist for the Boomtown Rats, and the man behind one of the best known piano solos in modern music?   I give you …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        It’s not even a matter of principle, I think, Olga.   It’s far simpler: she’s doing the same job, she should get the same cash.   You can even argue she should be on more, as she has experience: I can still remember the Sandwich Quiz, back in the day.   Required family viewing, that was!

†        It’s amazing what you can do with a remake, Debbi!   It’s about time someone did a Mac remake of Atic Atac: used to be my favourite ZX Spectrum game!   (I don’t think AbFab will get one: it’s a tricky one to pull off!)
