Spiderman: Far from Home — A Review

16th November, 2019.

Right …

Have you ever been nervous about a job interview?

I’ve got one on Monday afternoon: and I’m not nervous … yet.

I am a little intimidated by the amount of possible reading up I have to do: ands by the amount of technology I’d be selling.

It’s something of a different realm … !

~≈†≈~

At any rate … ?

It’s a Saturday: where I’ve had little to do … bar catch something on TV.

Even with this year’s Children in Need over?   There’s still little on that I wanted to watch.

Frankly?

I — metaphorically — grabbed a film.

Yep: you’re right.

Spiderman: Far from Home with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) investigating the destruction of a Mexican village: by what appears to be an earth elemental.

Meanwhile?   Peter Parker (Spiderman, played by Tom Holland) is finalising the details of a school trip to Europe: where he hopes to tell MJ (Zendaya*) how he feels about her.

Details ruined when Happy (Jon Favreau) informs Peter he’s going to get a phone call.

From Fury …

Which Peter happily manages to ignore.

Until he and his school mates get to the romantic city of Venice …

Why Fury catches up with Spidey, and introduces him to Mysterio/Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal): a hero apparently from an alternative Earth, eager to help … after his world was destroyed by a fire elemental.

Mysterio’s help … ?   Involves a lot of fantastic prediction …

And that, very specifically, that Prague will be attacked.

Peter is keen to help, but knows he can’t.

The school’s next stop … ?

Is Paris.

Until the teachers taking the class around Venice … ?

Announce there’s been a little change in plan …

Now …

As I think I mention in the video version go this review, I am not necessarily a fan of the Marvel franchise.

There’s possibly too many of them for me to keep track of.

And I’ve always like Batman, to be frank!

However?

Blade caught my eyes, back in the day: I should may write about it.

Earlier Spiderman movies, caught my eye: as did the incredibly impressive Black Panther.

But knowing there were a lot of franchise entries?   Was rather off-putting.

I have to give Spiderman: Far from Home credit, there.

It doesn’t need that much knowledge of the franchise’s overall arc to work out what’s going on.

And it benefits from the high production values the franchise has.

Values that are very evident in the fight scenes, I should add: and in the scenes of utter carnage the Elementals inflict.

They’re fantastic†.

About my only issue?

Is some of the editing seemed a little off key.

There’s a scene where Peter Parker ends up meeting Fury’s SHIELD team in a basement that doesn’t seem to flow correctly: from a previous one where Peter is talking to Ned.

What can I tell you?

Bar that?

Bar that, I saw Spiderman: Far from Home, tonight.

It’s not perfect.

But it IS as entertaining as Tom Holland’s last Spidey outing.
Spiderman: Far from Home
★★★☆

*        I should remind Dune fans that Zendaya is due to play Chani in the upcoming movie version.

†        Of course, if we’re feeling picky?   And I do, sometime, watching a big SF or superhero film.   If we’re picky, we have to ask a question or two.   The main one?   What on earth are the insurance premiums like, if you live in a city — like Gotham, or Marvel’s version of New York — that gets frequently trashed by battling super villains, feuding super heroes, invading aliens and marauding occult monstrosities?   The amount of cars that get flipped over?   Probably isn’t covered by third party, fire and theft deals.   The buildings insurance will be stupid.   And that’s before the Ghostbusters turn up!
