Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 2-4-2022: Haile Selassie.

2nd April, 2022.

Hmmm …

It’s got to be said, April’s prices rises … ?

Aren’t necessarily good.

Frankly?

I’d maybe have my heating on for a few minutes after I get up: at least, in April.

The rises … ?   Couldn’t have come at a worse time, from where I’m sitting.

They’ve turned up … just when there’s a cold snap.

Yum!

~≈🥶≈~

I’m not gay, so you know.

I am left handed: and, like many of us, will have heard of, or known, people who’ve been forced to use their right hands by assorted school teachers, over the years.

I know at least two.

I can also remember at least one school teacher at primary school repeatedly asking ‘Wouldn’t you find it easier in your other hand?’

So … ?   I don’t like the idea of forced conversions.

From left to right, or gay to straight: that’s equally as wrong, I feel.

As you may or may not know?   There’s a thing called conversation therapy: that aims to turn gay people straight.

It’s usually performed by various right-of-centre churches, usually seen as unsuccessful, and usually seen as both unscientific and unethical.

The little I know of forcing people to change handedness tells me there’s an increased chance of someone developing a stutter as a result: of minor neurological damage.

So I wonder if there’s similar damage being done by conversion therapy: on top of any psychological damage it may do.

At ANY rate … ?

Yesterday, the Government decided to introduce legislation to ban conversion therapy.   Then changed their mind, and decided not to.

Then, after a back bench and opposition backlash?

Decided to introduce the withdrawn legislation, banning the practise in the process.

At least … the legislation bans using conversion therapy on gay, lesbian and bisexual people … but not transgender people.

Which is another argument waiting to happen.

The flip flopping leaves me thinking this;
  1. Including transgender people in the bill obviously has caused back stage arguments.   Whether we’re pro- or anti- transgender rights, it’s a famously controversial subject.
  2. The bill’s not perfect: but is a start on outlawing an odious practise.
  3. The Government is worse than wrong: it’s indecisive.
I’m probably not the only person to think an indecisive is the worst form of government going.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

The day also saw Trevor^ leaving us a message.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        Haile Selassie was proclaimed Emperor.   On 2nd April of which year: 1929, 1930 or 1931?

Q2)        Of where?

Q3)        His dynasty claim to be descended from which Biblical figure: Moses, King Solomon or Noah?

Q4)        Before being named as Emperor, he was Ras Tafari Markonnen.   The title of Ras made him roughly equivalent to a what: duke, viscount or baron?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Haile Selassie is the key figure to Rastafarians.   The Rastafari religion has its origins on which island?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        It’s 1st April.   How many days are there in April: 28, 30 or 31?
A1)        30.

Q2)        April is — in the UK — National what Month: Cheese Month, Pet Month or Tree Month?
A2)        National Pet Month.

Q3)        April lived in Belize Zoo.   She was one of the world’s longest lived what's: ant-eaters, tapirs or bonobos?
A3)        Tapirs.

Q4)        April are a girl band founded in 2015.   From where: Japan, China or South Korea?
A4)        South Korea.

Q5)        Finally?   Brendon April is South African player of what: Rugby Sevens, Rugby Union or Rugby League?
A5)        Rugby Union.
Here’s a thought …
“In time of war it suits the enemy to aim his guns at adorned shields, ornaments, silver and gold cloaks, silk shirts and all similar things.   Whether one possesses a jacket or not, it is best to wear a narrow-sleeved shirt with faded colours.”
Emperor Haile Selassie.
Which reminds me President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been dressing down, recently.

He’s been taking very good advice.

There’s also a playlist …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

The quizmaster’s decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!

We’re getting farmers complain about the same sort of thing, Olga: the increase in prices is making it harder for them to keep operating.   And I think our leaving the EU’s not helped, either: we can’t take part in any block buying that Spain and Portugal end up putting through.
Having a cap would help … the UK Government raising the one here, is what’s causing the issue.   Government common sense is about as rare as rocking horse manure.   It’s a bit like decisiveness …

Um … it would be, Debbi, if it were genuine: he’s about twenty-five.   The trouble is, one of the producers they listed — *+Flora Ilops+* — is an anagram of April Fools … … … … … (It took me ten minutes …)

^        Trouble is, Trevor, I’m on a pre-pay meter.   Normally, I wouldn’t want to, either: it shows me how much money I’ve got left.   Unfortunately?   I can’t actually change the meter.   I can turn the heating off and wear a jumper.

Q3) King Solomon

Q4) Duke

Q5) Jamaica
It's all a nightmare, I mean about the government. And although sometimes it is good that they listen to reason, changing their minds continuously doesn't help anybody make plans or know what is going on.
I have watched several documentaries about gay rights and transexuals, and one who was, I think, Argentinian, talked about having had conversion therapy (rather aversion therapy) as they would submit him to watching videos of naked men or whatever and give him electroshocks. It didn't help, of course.
I always remember a Rastafarian patient we had. He would carry their version of the Bible around the ward, and it was a HUGE book.
And I also always remember an African patient whom we treated and kept telling us he was an African prince. He did have a mental illness as well, but we later discovered that he really was a prince. Go figure!
