Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 5-10-2021: Portugal

5th October, 2021

I wonder what happened there … !?

You’re online, aren’t you?   I’m assuming you are: you wouldn’t be reading this is you weren’t.

Given you’re online, you’ve possibly come across Facebook: possibly one of the biggest social media sites.

And one that owns Instagram and WhatsApp.

All three went down, last night.

And are now back up.

Quite what happened there … ?

I couldn’t tell you.

But I ended up nattering to people via old fashioned text message!

~≈¥≈~

As an extra thought … ?

I’ve just had a call from +34633109250, a Spanish number.

The woman at the other end claimed to be from Amazon: and was asking about the iPhone I’d apparently ordered.

When I said “You’re a scam call, aren’t you?”, the lady hung up.

Eyes peeled, folks!

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Edith†, Mum‡ and Debbi^ putting in their answers: with Olga, Debbi and Mum scoring five out of five, and Edith on four.

The day also saw Trevorª leaving us a message.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        5th October is Republic Day in Portugal: marking the day it became a republic.   In which year: 1910, 1911 or 1912?

Q2)        What is Portugal, now: a monarchy, a republic or a theocracy?

Q3)        Portugal shares the Iberian Peninsular with which country: Germany, Italy or Spain?

Q4)        Lisbon is Portugal’s capital city.   What’s Portugal’s largest city?

Q5)        Finally … ?   What was Portugal’s currency: before it adopted the Euro: the escudo, the peso or the peseta?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        4th October saw the birth of author, Anne Rice. In which year of the 1940s?
A1        1941.

Q2)        In which US state: Louisiana, New York or California?
A2)        Louisiana.

Q3)        Her best known work is the 1976 book, Interview with the what?
A3)        Interview with the Vampire.

Q4)        Her best known character has been played by both Tom Cruise, and Stuart Townsend. Who is that character: Lestat, Louis or Claudia?
A4)        Lestat: or Lestat de Lioncourt in full.

Q5)        Finally?   That best known work is set — initially — in the US city Anne was born in.   Which US city: New Orleans, New York or San Francisco?
A5)        New Orleans.
Here’s a thought …
“The example of family unity, pursuit of education and respect for the elderly set by the Portuguese are profound lessons for all of us.”
Barbara B. Kennelly.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

The quizmaster’s decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        You know you mention Zafon, Olga, I’ve STILL got The Shadow of the Winds — an English translation — in my To Be Read pile!   Admittedly, Clive Barker’s Books of Blood are further up: I’m keen to read The Forbidden, the short story that eventually became Candyman.
His daughter writes?   I’m going to have to keep my eyes peeled: I, Claudius and Claudius the God were superb.

I think I’ll have to plan ahead for it, Edith!   You know the videos are still up for the two quizzes I’ve already done: the second one has had a few more views!   (The older one was before I had a computer with a web cam: I used my Mac’s text to speech function!)

Hello, Mum!   Oh, WhatsApp is now working!

^        I know exactly where you’re coming from, Debbi!   Oh, I’ve got Evil of the Daleks stewing, so you know: I should start reviewing it in a few days time!   (Oh, Battlestar Galactica’s on iPlayer: the rebooted version.   I may have to check in with that, again.)

ª        Trevor, I can only refer you to my reply, yesterday!!

Q2) A republic

Q3) Spain

Q4) Lisbon

Q5) Escudo
I do recommend the Shadow of the Wind, and the whole series (although I still have to get hold of one of them). It's close to my heart because of the Barcelona connection, but being a book lover, it's irresistible.
Oh, I saw this about Earworms and thought of you:

Don't get your hopes up, though, but it's interesting. (I've used Ted-Ed with Anna, although it is not exclusively for teaching English, as it has a bit of everything, and plenty of riddles that might tickle your fancy as well).
