Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 27-6-2022 — Petya

27th June, 2022.

Ladies And gentlemen … I have an official issue!

Yes: my washing machine has broken down!

Or, at least, isn’t switching on.

Which is awkward.

I’ve changed the fuse on the wall switch:

I’m planning on heading into the shop where I got it, today.

Hopefully?

I’ll still be under warranty, and can get the thing repaired.

If not … ?

I can only hope I win the lottery: or can get an emergency loan from the Benefits office.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        Cyberattacks using the Petya malware began on 27th June, 2017.   The attacks were mainly aimed at which eastern European country: Ukraine, Bulgaria or Romania?

Q2)        The attack is said to have been carried by which country: the USA, Russia or China?

Q3)        The malware first appeared in which year: 2015, 2016 or 2017?

Q4)        The malware took its name from a gadget in a James Bond movie.   Which Bond movie: Goldfinger, GoldenEye or The Man with the Golden Gun?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Petya was a version of what type of malware: ransomware, worm or virus?
Yesterday’s answers are in today’s video.

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        The first French Grand Prix started: on 26th June, 1906.   Just outside which rather appropriate city?
A1)        Le Mans.

Q2)        26th June is the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.   Which illegal drug comes from the Golden Triangle: cannabis, heroin or cocaine?
A2)        Heroin.   (The area stretches between Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.   By contrast, the Golden Crescent stretches between Afghanistan and Pakistan.)

Q3)        26th June is Flag Day in Romania.   Romania’s flag is a what: nordic flag, tricolour or swallowtail?
A3)        Tricolour.

Q4)        26th June is the feast day of Saint Vigils of Trent.   This particular Trent is now called Trento, and is in which European country: Italy, San Marino or Liechtenstein?
A4)        Italy.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Who held their final concert, on 26th June, 1977: Bob Marley, Elvis Presley or Reginald Dwight?
A5)        Elvis Presley.
Here’s a thought …
“A series of powerful cyberattacks using the Petya malware began on 27 June 2017 that swamped websites …”
From the Wikipedia entry on the attack.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

The quizmaster’s decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Phew!   It’s nice to know she’s recovering quickly, Olga!
        Tricolor … ?   I’m saying nothing!
And, yes, you’re right: it’s … well, I think the less said the better.   But both Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamarr commented on it at Glastonbury.

        Hello, Mum!

‡        What gets me, Debbi?   Is that, just a few days before, President Biden managed to sign some sort of gun control bill through.   I’d love to say the US is making an effort, but overturning Roe v Wade says otherwise!   Both Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamarr mentioned it at Glastonbury, so you know.

Q1) Ukraine

Q2) Russia (although it seems it was developed by the USA, so perhaps if all of them behaved...)

Q3) 2016

Q4) GoldenEye

Q5) ransomware

Not sure about any of this as the explanations are a bit confusing, I imagine because nobody is going to come out and explain fully...
Sorry about color, although I suspect it’s up to Grammarly. I set it up for American English when I was volunteering for the University of the People, as they insisted on American spelling, and I am not sure I’ve ever changed it back (or can even change it...)
Last time we had a problem with the washing machine, and ours is pretty new as well, it stopped in mid-wash, and eventually when we cleaned up the filter, although nothing seemed to have come out, it started again. (Later my mother realised that some little stone had come out. That was after they had replaced the boiler, so it was probably something that must have been removed and ended up in the drains...) At first we thought it was the plug and we tried to use an extension and plug it elsewhere (it is outside on the patio, so there’s only one outlet there), but of course, nothing happened.
I hope it is sorted out soon and it doesn’t involve spending more money. Do you have contents insurance? Some of them include some repairs as well...
