Star Trek Discovery — Series 4 Episode 13 — Coming Home — A Review.

17th June, 2022.

Right … It’s Friday.

And?

I’ve just turned my oven down: I’d rather dinner didn’t burn.

I’m writing this opening introduction to this piece: whilst doing dinner.

Once I’ve eaten it?

Yep: I’m going to be watching Coming Home: the last episode of this particular series of Star Trek Discovery.

I’ll be back tomorrow night: to let you know what I thought.

Episode 13Coming Home — opens with the usual summary of earlier episodes.

Then shifts: to show us Federation Headquarters heading for Earth: to help the planet’s evacuation in the face off the on-coming Dark Matter Anomaly.

It shows us Lieutenant Tilly (Mary Wiseman) giving ‘her’ cadets their marching orders: and their field promotion to ensign.

It also shows us Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr) organising the evacuation: ordering more ships into action.

Then moves again: showing us Captain Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the Discovery, still trapped in the hyper field home of Special Ten-C.

Trapped: unable to get out, or to do anything to stop Tarka — who’s captured Book’s ship — destroying the DMA’s power source.   Her only immediate option?

Is to find out who let Tarka and Book escape.

That escape?   Has caused the Ten-C to stop talking to the Discovery.

It’s only then?   That President T’Rina (Tara Roslin) of Ni’Var makes a suggestion: that she perform a mind-meld, in a last ditch effort to communicate.

All she can find out?

Is that the Discovery is doomed!

Now … how did I feel: both about Coming Home, and the fourth series of Star Trek: Discovery?

It’s got to be said, Coming Home was a decent finish to the series: we get tension, drama … and a closing episode that rounds off the story nicely.

Helped, I think, by a great set of performances: especially from both Sonequa Martin-Green, and from David Ajala.

And, I suspect, some good direction.

Deborah Chow is doing a fantastic job on each episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi that I’ve seen: and I believe that Olatunde Osunsanmi — the director of Coming Home — is her equivalent for Discovery.

He’s the one that’s managing to make the episodes he directs look good.

As for series itself?

Star Trek Discovery has come along way since its early roots: and find it very reminiscent of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Martin-Green’s Captain Burnham equally as reminiscent of Patrick Stewart’s performance Jean-Luc Picard.

You could argue that’s derivative.

You could: I think it’s not bad thing.

As a final point?

I’ve rated every episode I could: including Coming Home.

Giving it a healthy four stars.

Coming Home.
★★★★

And the series?   An a average of three.

Series Four. (Average per episode.)
★★★☆

Frankly?

Next week is a whole new week: we’ll have to see if Star Trek Picard*, or Star Trek Strange New Worlds — or something else! — grabs me.

I’ll see you then.
