Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 30th August 2022.

30th August, 2022.

Yes, it’s officially Tuesday: and my nephew’s popping over, this afternoon!

I’m looking forward to that.

But it does means there’ll be more videos.

Ahem!

~≈†≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and M on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        30th August is Constitution Day in Kazakhstan: marking the day the country adopted it.   In which year of the 1990s?

Q2) 30th August, 1909, saw Charles Walcott discover a fossil deposit called the Burgess Shale.   The formation is in which country: Canada, the USA or Mexico?

Q3) Ernest Rutherford was born: on 30th August, 1871.   In a famous 1909 experiment, he passed alpha particles through what: gold foil, a lead brick or glass?

Q4) 30th August is an international day that marks those who have been secretly imprisoned.   It’s known as the International Day of the … what?

Q5) Finally … ?   DJ, John Peel^, was born on 30th August, 1939.   What was the name of his long running Radio 4 show: The Perfumed Garden, Offspring or Home Truths?
Q1)        29th August saw the birth of Michael Jackson. In which year of the 1950s?
A1)        1958.

Q2)        He came to prominence in his family’s band: the Jackson 5.   Between 1968 to 1976, the band were with which soulful American label?
A2)        Motown.

Q3)        1979 saw him release his first album on Epic Records.   What was it: Off the Wall, Thriller or Bad?
A3)        Off the Wall.

Q4)        The video of Jackson’s Thriller is one of the best known music videos ever made.   Which directed that video: Steven Spielberg, John Landis or George Lucas?
A4)        John Landis.   (There’s still a shadow over Jackson: because of those accusations.   This song, and its accompanying video?   Are still works of genius, regardless.)

Q5)        Finally … ?   His death was linked to an overdose of Propofol.   Propofol is normally used as a what: sedative, anti-depressant or anti-inflammatory?
A5)        Sedative.   In an interview with Graham Norton, the late Robin Williams makes an interesting point or two about it.
Here’s a thought …
“All science is either physics or stamp collecting.”
Ernest Rutherford, 30 August 1871 – 19 October 1937.
And, as it’s the late John Peel’s birthday?

Here’s some of the better known songs from the various Peel sessions.

The Peel Sessions were legendary: and gave a LOT of acts — Bowie, the Specials and Bolan, included — their first bit of airtime.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!

That’s very true, Olga.   I think the chocolate and cherry sundae for afters might have been over doing it, though.   It was nice though!
El correfoc … The Fire Run, yes?   It sounds like suitably scary fun: and a bit like the Krampus character that crops up in some Austrian carnivals!
Tax is a tricky one, Olga, it really is.   I think you’re right though: as much goes to the government as it does to the energy and fuel companies.   If I remember the few bits and bobs from my time working at Stratford VAT office?   It’s not supposed to be levied on essentials; most food, kids clothes and — HA! — financial services.   It seems gas and electricity are charged at 5%.   It should be exempt, if you ask me!

‡        The man had quite an output, Debbi.   As did his nephew.   Michael Grade managed to approve Potter’s The Singing Detective, as one example: it was one of the TV events of the 1980s.

^        Some of the music Peely played was a little way out, for me.   Annie Nightingale’s Sunday night show, on the other hand?   Was superb: and introduced me to these …

I think essentials should not be taxed, and everybody should have basic access to them, everywhere. There are truly ridiculous thing, though. Here, until quite recently, sanitary towels were taxed as if they were "luxury items". So, it seems that being a woman is a luxury, and that is especially unfair, considering the pay gap. They shouldn't be taxed at all, but still...
Have fun with Jules!

I love The Singing Detective! The British version, of course!

1. 1995
2. Canada
3. gold foil
4. Disappeared (Hmm ... why am I reminded of a certain show? :) )
5. The Perfumed Garden

The American movie was ... not British enough. Or something. :)
