Friday 9 December 2022

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 9th December 2022.

9th December, 2022.

It’s a Friday.

You know that as well as I do.   It’s Friday, so I’m defrosting milk, mulling over the fact it’s Follow Friday, and very aware there’s a postal strike on, today.

The Communication Workers Union has picked the right day for it.

As … ?

The temperature looks decidedly parky.

Our local postman?   Usually only wears long trousers when it’s snowing.

He may need them, at some point!

Talking of the weather?

The Department of Work and Pensions — the government department that pays pensions and benefits — is going to be paying a ten pound bonus for Christmas: to those receiving some benefits.

Guess what?

I don’t qualify.

Drat.

That could’ve been handy.

I do — I think — qualify for the DWP’s Cold Weather Payment of twenty-five pounds: once we get seven or more cold days in a row.

But?   I’ve messaged my Work Coach, just in case.

We’ll have to see.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on three.

The day also saw Trevor^ leaving us a message.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        9th December is Anna’s Day.   Where: Norway, Sweden or Denmark?

Q2)        9th December, 1952, saw the birth of actor, Michael Dorn.   He played Jedediah Turner in which series: CHiPs, Star Trek: The Next Generation or I am Weasel?

Q3)        9th December, 1934, saw the birth of Dame Judi Dench.   She played Laura Dalton in which series: A Fine Romance, Love in a Cold Climate or As Time Goes By?

Q4)        Redd Foxx was born on 9th December, 1922.   He played Fred G. Sanford in which US series: Sanford and Son, All In The Family or Men Behaving Badly?

Q5)        Finally … ?   9th December, 1906, saw the birth of Admiral Grace Hopper.   She helped designed which computer language: COBOL, C++ or Java?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        8th December is Rōhatsu.   In which Japanese religion: Buddhism or Shinto?
A1)        Buddhism: or, at least, many forms of Japanese Buddhism.   It marks the day the Buddha achieved enlightenment.

Q2)        8th December is the least day of Saint Patapios of Thebes.   He’s the patron saint of people suffering from what: scurvy, dropsy or scurf?
A2)        Dropsy.

Q3)        8th December, 2021, saw the death of Robbie Shakespeare.   He, and musical partner, Sly Dunbar, played what: reggae, heavy metal or jazz?
A3)        Reggae.   (Boops is one of the most menacing tunes … )

Q4)        Either Margaret Hughes, or Anne Marshall, was the first woman to appear on an English stage: on 8th December, 1660.   In which of Shakespeare’s plays: Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew or Othello?
A4)        Othello.

Q5)        Finally … ? 8th December, 1818, saw the birth of Charles 3rd.   This particular Charles 3rd was prince of where: Monaco, Luxembourg or San Marino?
A5)        Monaco.
Here’s a thought …
“I’m not providing any solutions.   I’m simply saying: ‘Can we please get the conversation going?’”
Joanna Trollope, born December 9, 1943.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!

Cheers, Olga!   Lord knows why I put Patios, down: but I’ve got it corrected.
Oh, lord, yes: Kiss do quite a bit of stuff: t-shirts, posters, coffins — coffins, for heavens sake! — you name, they probably do it.   The rarer stuff is possibly worth keeping an eye opener for: the long term value can be good: if you’re investing.
Yes, I saw the invite: yes, it IS a bit far … but I have given it a retweet.   If it gets as far as Nina, I’ll be surprised.

It’s nice to have you in, Debbi, either way.   Oh, I’ve just done the videos for the 12th and 18th: they’re both ten question sets.   Some of the art for the 18th is doomy …

^        Well, I had a few spare, Trevor: with the strikes on the go, I though you’d appreciate quick!

Q1) Sweden

Q2) CHiPs

Q3) A Fine Romance

Q4) Sanford and Son

Q5) COBOL. She sounds like quite a character and well ahead of her time.
I am not sure if I should say I hope it remains cold, but it might be worth it if the extra money is forthcoming.
I'll keep you posted on how it all goes. Next week will be quite busy, but I am not sure what I'll be doing yet, other than having a busy Sunday (I am volunteering at a telethon. I've been doing it for the last few years), and then I have a class with Jordi on Monday.

Hopefully, ten questions with short answers? :) She asked, hopefully! :)

1. Sweden and Norway (and Finland)
2. CHiPs (I didn't know that!)
3. A Fine Romance
4. Sanford and Son
5. COBOL

There's an acronym I haven't seen in a while. I remember it from computer science classes I took a few ages ago. :)
