21st November, 2024: World Television Day.
I think we can safely say I have a new Mac.
“I have a new Mac”.
And that I set it up, yesterday: with about the expected amount of swearing!
Pairing my Android phone with the new machine involved searching through System Settings, to change two different Bluetooth settings.
Copying my Photos and iMovie library to the new machine was simple: although getting my AppleTV 4K to recognise that Home Sharing was on, and my media library was over here … involved changing the name of my media library.
Oh, and the power button … ?
Is in the bottom left hand corner to the machine.
Literally!
As for the new keyboard?
The old keyboard has a FN key in the upper left hand side, and an eject button.
The new one, by contrast?
Has a finger-print key instead of the eject button, and moves the FN key to the bottom left.
The new one has a fingerprint sensor, instead of the Eject button.
And puts the FN button in the bottom left hand corner.
That’s … well, as wonderfully tactile as this new keyboard feels — you can lock your screen by pressing the fingerprint button, the FN button calls up the character viewer, the button marked ‘What’s This’ doesn’t do much beyond call up context menus— that does mean re-learning a few keyboard shortcuts.
It’s going to take a while to get used to it!
Let’s move on.
Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.
Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?
Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.
Q1) 21st November is World Television Day. Smart TVs can be connected to what: the internet, a hard-drive or the telephone? Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q2) IPTV is Internet what TV?
Q3) Cable TV services are usually transmitted over what: fibre optic cables, copper cable or silver cables?
Q4) Sky, and BSB, broadcast what: satellite TV, cable TV or terrestrial TV?
Q5) Finally … ? A microwaveable meal eaten in front of the television is a TV … what?

A5) The USSR.
“Much more real is what’s relayed to us by the TV.”A song …
John Brunner.
And an earworm …
Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.
Decisions about scores are final.
Thank you for coming: have a good day.
* Olga, did whoever wrote about the parrot, read 2000AD? They ran a famous Judge Dredd story about an orang-utan becoming mayor! Either animal would be a better option.
It strikes me Vegas is very well positioned, when it comes to entertainment: it calls itself the “entertainment capital of the world”, if I remember! Although I get the impression Death Valley isn’t the place to visit in summer§!
Your father sounds like a sensible man, Olga! There’s a lot you can do with a nail in a wall! Which reminds me, I need to find a drill: I’ve some guitar holders I need to hang!
† Hello, Mum … !
‡ Last time I heard the phrase, Debbi … was … um … you know, I’m blowed if I can remember when I heard it, last: I think it was in the 1990s …
I’m tempted by that Dredd shirt, to be honest: it’s very relevant, even though the story is a few years old! Relevant … or possibly offensive. Oh, and I thought this t-shirt was appealing … …
§ Pointless trivia for you, Olga: Apple now name their Mac operating systems for landmarks in and things from California. The current one’s called Sequoia. I don’t think they’ll use Death Valley, though: it’s possibly not got the right feel!

The author probably has. And I recall I cat being put forward as a mayor somewhere (perhaps somewhere in the USA), although it was a long time ago. Well, and we know about Caligula and his horse, so I guess it's old news.
I am reading a book called 'Cute' set in the UK but in some near-future (I wouldn't call it dystopia, because it's too similar to the present. Although perhaps we're living in a dystopia already). The UK government are trying to be seen to do something about the unemployed and the population in general, because AI has taken up so many jobs that a lot of people are unemployed or are going to be. They decide to ask publicity companies to come up with an idea to motivate people. And one of the senior guys in a publicity agency thinks of creating a bot (called Colin) that works via AI, of course, to give advice to people, motivate them, and become their friend. It is a physical thing, like a yellow smiley, but it moves and reacts, and talks and... Well, you can imagine. I haven't finished it yet, but it provides an interesting commentary on politics, advertising and technology.
Oh, and pleased to hear that you managed to set things up with the usual glitches. Better you than me. I haven't changed my laptop for a while, and while it keeps going, here it will stay. I have too many other things to worry about.
Oh, here is a link to the book, in case you're curious:

I don't remember if I mentioned I was covering a correfoc on Saturday. Just in case, here is the article with the pics. I did end up with a few burnt holes on my coat...

We used to have TV dinners a lot when I was a kid. I always loved them. Especially the apple crisp for dessert. :)
I think my spell check is getting accustomed to my occasional use of British spelling. For a while, I think I confused it. :)
