The Daily Teaser — 13-5-2012

Dear lord, but I think I’m yawning …

I have to confess, I actually put in the hardest day’s physical work I’v done, for a long time.
Believe it or not, painting my bathroom.

OK, granted, it’s an only slightly less virulent shade of yellow than before: albeit one that possibly won’t notice.

But … ?

It’s one that means Jude won’t have to wear the shades for long, when he’s at mine!

AHEM … !

Let’s get moving on, shall we … ?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw both Debbi* and Mr Strict putting in their answers: with Debbi determined to have a go in a UK car, and admitting she’s rampantly blogging, it saw both scoring 6 out of 6.

Let’s see how they —and you— do with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the ‘How To’, License and video …

Q1) 13th May, 1861, saw astronomer, John Tebbutt, discover the Great Comet of 1861: which country was he from … ?
Q2) 13th May, 1995, saw Alison Hargreaves reach the summit of which mountain, unaided … ?
Q3) More to the point, what’s that mountain’s name … in Tibetan … ?
Q4) 13th May, 1994, saw which TV presenter make his last TV appearance … ?
Q5) 13th May, 1969, saw sectarian violence in which Malaysian city … ?
Q6) And finally … 13th May, 1861, saw the first railway line open, in what’s now which country … ?

And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 12th May, 1924, saw the birth of comedian, Tony Hancock: what was the name of his successful TV and radio series … ?   A1) Hancock’s Half Hour.
Q2) More to the point, in which episode of the TV series did he famously read his lines from cue cards and tele-prompters … ?   A2) The Blood Donor.
Q3) 12th May, 2002, saw Jimmy Carter become the first US president — former or current — to visit which country … ?   A3) Cuba.
Q4) 12th May, 1937, saw whose coronation as King of the UK … ?   A4) George 6th.
Q5) 12th May, 1881, saw which North African country become a French protectorate … ?   A5) Tunisia.
Q6) And finally … 12th May, 1935, saw the two founder members of Alcoholics Anonymous meet for the first time: in which US state … ?   A6) Ohio.   (In Akron, if you’re curious, which is also the home town of Devo.)

Enjoy those, everyone: I’ll catch you later.

I’ll leave you with this tune, from Hootie and the Blowfish frontman’s Darius Rucker’s birthday …

Oh … And as we’ve mentioned Devo … ?

I’ll tell you to go watch their very strange Jocko Homo videoª …

*        Actually, Debbi, there’s a tale to Spasticus Autisticus: did you know it’s the only one of Ian Dury’s records to have been banned by the BBC … ?   They thought he was being deliberately offensive to disabled people.   Truth was, Dury had suffered from Polio as a childº, and had written the song as a way of making the fact 1981 was the UN Year of the Disabled.

º        And couldn’t walk without aid.

ª        And I can’t help but think Talking Heads and Patti Smith possibly picked up an idea or two, there …

I remember you mentioned that about Ian Drury and the song. That's why I think it's so awesome. He looks for reasons to be happy and knows that prettiness is a lie. That makes him a happy fool. http://mackthewriter.wordpress.com/2012/04/13/im-a-fool/ #iamfoolish See? :)
