Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 26th July, 2022

26th July, 2022.

Yes: it’s now Tuesday.

And I’ve got the day off.

In a manner of speaking!

In other words, I’ve got nothing planned for the day: beyond making a phone call or two, and possibly buying the makings of some spaghetti.

Oh … and watching Stranger Things, tonight.

It’s looking rather good.

~≈🧟‍♀️≈~

I keep an eye on the technology news: occasionally, at any rate.

So I’m very aware that facial recognition technology is something of a hot issue.

It’s seen by some as being very invasive of privacy: and many will remind you that it’s had — and probably still has — issues recognising people of colour.

I recall reading one piece that told us many black British men had been asked to take off their lipstick.   I’ll let that sink in, shall I … ?

At any rate … it’s problematic.

It’s also come to a crunch point.

Southern Co-op* is facing legal issues: at least, according to this piece.

Basically?   Big Brother Watch has filed a complaint about Southern’s use of Facewatch: a facial recognition.

It’s invading people’s privacy.

Southern, themselves?   Say they’re only planning to use it in branches with a history of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Personally?   And while I’m aware of the issues?

I’ve also worked in retail.

Were I still working in shops?

I’d feel comfier knowing something like this is around.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum†, Olga‡ and Debbi^ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring ten out of ten.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        26th July, 1951, saw the premiere of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland.   In which English city: London, Manchester or Liverpool?

Q2)        The film is base on books by whom: Lewis Carroll, Edgar Rice Burroughs or Edward Lear?

Q3)        26th July is Esperanto Day.   Esperanto is an artificial what?

Q4)        26th July is Independence Day in Liberia.   Liberia is on which continent: Africa, Europe or Asia?

Q5)        Finally … ?   26th July, 1928, saw the birth of director, Stanley Kubrick.   Which of his films starred Malcolm McDowell as Alex?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        25th July is the feast day of Saint James the Great, the patron saint of Spain.   And who else: medics, pharmacists or ambulance drivers?
A1)        Pharmacists.

Q2)        His remains are said to be in the Spanish town of Satiago de Compostela.   The town’s in which Spanish region: Asturias, Galicia or Cantabria?
A2)        Galicia.

Q3)        The region in question is what’s called an autonomous community.   How many autonomous communities are there in Spain: fifteen, sixteen or seventeen?
A3)        Seventeen.   That doesn’t include the Spain’s two autonomous cities, Melilla and Ceutas: which are in Africa.

Q4)        One Spanish region — the Canary Islands — are in which Ocean: the Pacific, Atlantic or Indian?
A4)        The Atlantic Ocean.

Q5)        Another Spanish region — the Balearic Islands — is in which sea: the Cantabrian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea or the Gulf of Genoa?
A5)        The Mediterranean Sea.

Q6)        Spain’s current currency is the Euro.   Since when: 2022, 2012 or 2002?
A6)        2002.

Q7)        Spain’s current currency is the Euro.   What was the previous currency: the peseta, the dollar or the lira?
A7)        The Peseta.

Q8)        Madrid is the capital of Spain: and its largest metropolitan area.   What’s Spain’s second largest metropolitan area: Barcelona, Valencia or Seville?
A8)        Barcelona.

Q9)        Gazpacho is a type of Spanish soup.   Is it traditionally served how: hot, or cold?
A9)        Cold.   (There’s a famously silly episode of Red Dwarf that hinges on it.   Just don’t tell Arnold Rimmer!)

Q10)        Finally?   Flamenco is a form of dance.   With its roots in which Spanish region: Aragon, Asturias or Andalusia?
A10)        Andalusia.
Here’s a thought …
“However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.”
Stanley Kubrick, July 26, 1928 – March 7, 1999.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Apparently, it’s principle businesses are food retailing and funeral homes.   Charlton Heston’s just turned up, and started causing a fuss.

Soylent green is people … people!

        Hello, Mum!

I have to admit, Olga: the only other time I’ve seen Gazpacho mentioned?   Was in an old episode of Red Dwarf.   The Chris Barrie character didn’t know it was supposed to be served cold!   I’m glad to be able to help with the questions, though!   It sounds like you had a long day!
That’s a great tune, by the way: I love the rhythm guitar part.   It always amazes me how some rhythm player make it sound so easy … !   (One pub I worked at had live music: and occasionally had Wilko Johnson — from Dr Feelgood? — playing live.   His rhythm guitar work was the same.)

^        Nooooooooo … !   The first one’s a hash sign, Debbi!   Which I know is awkward, in Maryland!

Wow! You've seen your share of things at the pub, Paul. Perhaps you should write a book...
I love that song, and Joan Manuel Serrat has some other beautiful ones as well. He has famously adapted some very well-known poems by Antonio Machado as well.
Enjoy your quiet day!

Oh, that hash? :) Hmm ... believe it or not, we're not all stoners. :) Not that I object, because it does have medicinal benefits. CBDs in particular help with pain.
