Stranger Things — Series 4 Chapter 3 — The Monster and the Superhero — A Review

*Spoilers*

12th July, 2022.

Right …

It’s officially official.

It’s Tuesday: and I have a working washing machine.

It’s a long story: but my washing machine broke down, recently.

Luckily, whilst still under warranty!

So it’s working, and I’m happy.

Now … as for the rest of the day … ?

Well: I’ve job hunted, done stuff … and made another unboxing video.

Tonight … ?

After dinner, I’m going to be watching the next episode of season four of Stranger ThingsThe Monster and the Superhero.

Which means I’ll have this post finished, tomorrow night!

13th July, 2022.

Chapter 3 — The Monster and the Superhero — opens not with a summary, but with a house: in the sleepy Nevada town of Ruth.

Where Cathy Owens (Christine Kellogg-Darrin) is doing the dishes … until she’s interrupted by the arrival of a military helicopter,

One whose occupants — a team led by Lt. Col. Jack Sullivan (Sherman Augustus) — are convinced her husband, Dr Sam Owens (Paul Reiser*), is the only person who knows the location of a certain schoolgirl.

Post titles?

Post titles, we shift to California: and see the aftermath of Eleven’s (Millie Bobby Brown’s) attack on the bully, Angela.

The crowd at Rink-O-Mania are sympathetic to Angela: and mostly ignoring a blood soaked Eleven.

A blood soaked Eleven who — driven back to the Byers family home by a stoned Jonathon and Argyle (Charlie Heaton and Eduardo Franco) — is NOT reassured by the conversation.

Especially Argyle’s belief that skates have rubber wheels … “so people don’t get hurt when they get schmacked!”

Once the group — including Will and Mike (Noah Schnapp and Finn Wolfhard) — get to the Byers Californian home?

Is when they find out the bad news: Joyce and Murray (Winona Ryder and Brett Gelman) are going to Alaska.

For what they say is a last minute business conference.

Meanwhile?   Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) is with the Hawkins High basket ball team: who’ve talked him into helping them find Eddie (Joseph Quinn).   The team’s captain, Jason (Mason Dye) is after revenge.

Eddie himself?

Eddie himself, is hidden in a local boat house.   Not only is he scared — he’s got police, and vigilantes out for his blood — but he’s also getting help from Dustin, Steven Max and Robin (Gaten Matarazzo, Joe Keery, Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke.)

And, frankly?   Eddie’s about as reassured as Eleven.

The Hawkins gang … ?

The Hawkins gang are left was few choices, once they leave Eddie.

As, heading out to do what they can, is when they met Nancy (Natalia Dyer): who’s at the trailer park Eddie usually calls home.

As they arrive, she’s being interviewed by Hawkins finest: they’ve found the body of her fellow journalist, Fred … with the same sort of injuries Chrissie had.

It’s only after the police leave, that Nancy tells Dustin and company what’s been happening: that’s she’s been told the real killer is someone called Victor Creel.

Desperately wanting to help Eddie?   The gang agree to help her.

Robin will assist Nancy, at the local library.

Whilst Dustin, Steve and Sadie find out all they can from the the School counsellor’s office.

It’s only there?   That Max notices Chrissy and Fred were patients of the counsellor.

It’s only there … that she realises she could be Vecna’s next victim.

And it’s only whilst all this is going on in Indiana, that Eleven is arrested in California.

Somebody has a deal for her.

Now …

What did I make of The Monster and the Superhero?

Is this good, bad or indifferent?

It is certainly not indifferent.

What we have in this episode is a cast that, again, is performing very well: combined with some well delivered writing.

Some very good writing, I think.

What the episode’s doing is giving us some beautiful dark scenes — especially at the episode’s end, with Sadie Sink’s Max realising she the’s next possible target, Eleven’s oh-so-Faustian deal with Dr Owens — combined with some faux, Much Ado About Nothing style romantic comedy.

With Dustin teasing Steve about Nancy, and neither Dustin — nor Nancy — quite realising why Steve and Robin aren’t dating.

If you’ve seen the third series?

You’ll know!

At any rate … ?

The Monster and the Superhero is another very well done episode.

Now …

With all that said … ?

It’s officially a Wednesday night: early evening, at least.

If you’re following my current batch of TV reviews?

You’ll know I’m watching both the fourth series of Stranger Things, and the second series of Star Trek Picard.

I’ll be catching Picard’s fourth episode — Watcher — on Friday, 15th July, and posting my reviews on the 16th.

I’ll be watching the next episode of Stranger Things, Dear Billy, on Tuesday, 19th July: and reviewing it on the 20th.

I would love it if you joined me: I’ll see you then!

The Monster and the Superhero.
