Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 16-10-2022 — World Food Day.

16th October, 2022.

It’s official: I woke up this morning with an earworm.

Yes: Dutch girl band, Luv’, were dancing around my head: Trojan Horse was literally being a aural trojan house.

Thankfully, it’s now faded.

But I’m willing to bet something else will turn up, later.

~≈Â≈~

At any rate … ?

I had an adventure, yesterday.

Sort of.

You’ll possibly be aware that I — like so many others — are eligible for a £650 top up our benefits.   And for £400 worth of help with our electricity bills.

That £400 is automatically credited to our bills for those of us paying by direct debit.

For those of us on smart, pay-as-you-go meters?   It’s automatically added to our meters.

For those — like me —on dumb , pay-as-you-go meters?

We get vouchers: ones we can ‘spend’ in pretty much the usual way.

Head for a shop with a PayPoint machine, hand over our card/key, and the voucher, and the shop assistant tops the card.

My first voucher?

Turned up, yesterday.

So, as I was heading into town, anyway … ?

I took it with me.

Figuring I could cash it in at one of the two shops with Paypoint terminals.

The first one … ?

The assistant happily admitted he had no clue how to put the thing through: but a colleague who did would be on shift later in the day, if I’d like to come back … ?

The second?   At the other end of the High Street?

Had no idea, either: as his terminal wasn’t showing him what to do!

I sighed, told him not to worry, and went to pick up my medications.

And — on the way back home? — popped into my local Nisa’s, the only other place in the area with a PayPoint terminal.

It turns out they’d had a few people top up with there: and were able to do the transaction in a matter of minutes.

I’m feeling the irony.

I went all the way to the High Street to spend that voucher.

And indeed up cashing it in, around the corner … !

Oh, JUST so you know?

I’ve finally caught up with Memento Mori, the fourth episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

It’s rather good!

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

The day also saw Trevor^ leaving us a message.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        16th October is World Food Day.   It’s been marked since which year of the 1980s?

Q2)        It’s organised by the FAO: the Food and what Organization … ?

Q3)        The day is supposed to mark what: food safety, food security or food sugars?

Q4)        Humanity can sense five different food tastes.   Sweetness, sourness, saltiness, bitterness … and which ‘U’?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Which French ‘C’ describes a country’s cooking?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        15th October is Breast Health Day.   Where: Europe, Africa or North America?
A1)        Europe.

Q2)        The America was launched on its first flight: on 15th October, 1910.   What was it: an airship, biplane or jet?
A2)        An airship.

Q3)        Germany introduced the Rentenmark on 15th October, 1923.   The Rentenmark was what: currency, a health service or a traffic code?
A3)        Currency.

Q4)        The From Hell letter was postmarked 15th October, 1888.   Who is claimed to have sent the letter: Queen Victoria, Jack the Ripper, Springheeled Jack or Benjamin Disraeli?
A4)        Jack the Ripper.

Q5)        Finally … ?   The Cassini–Huygens probe was launched: on 15th October, 1997.   What was it’s final destination: Saturn, Uranus or Neptune?
A5)        Saturn.
Here’s a thought: one as true now, as it was then …
“There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread.”
M. K. Gandhi.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum: see you later.

Well … the walk turned into a bit of an adventure, Olga.   At least I know where to go when the next voucher turns up.
Cheerful’s always good, I think.   Saying that?   The most cheerful tune I ever heard, was Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.   Then you listen to the lyrics!

‡        I’ll have to keep an eye peeled for it, Debbi: I’ve a lot of catching up to do!
Oh, did I mention Hellraiser?   And that the next episode of Strange New Worlds I’m on is Spock Amok?

Q1) This is a bit tricky. I’ve checked in several places and it seems it was established in 1979, but in November, and it has been celebrated since (so I imagine it would be 1980), but since 1981 they had started having a different theme each year. I am not 100% sure if there was one in 1980, and in some places it says 1980 and in some 1981, while I’ve fleetingly seen a mention of the decision being documented in December 1980 (in that case, the first one would have definitely been in 1981). So, whatever. If they don’t know (and I couldn’t find any information in their own website), I sure don’t.

Q2) Agriculture

Q3) Security. Well, it marks the founding of the FAO in 1945.

Q4) Umami

Q5) Cuisine
Wow! That's a tune! And I see what you mean about the lyrics!
Interesting adventures. It has happened to me plenty of times as well. You go very far to find something that in the end is next door. But the walk will have done you good, in any case.
Your earworm of today is very catchy as well.
