21st January, 2023.
Yes, it’s officially Saturday: and frankly?
And frankly, it’s going to be a little quiet.
Beyond a little light shopping … and finishing something I started last night: a review of the first episode of The Crusade.
Here’s the intro, in case you’re interested …
~≈¥≈~
I keep an eye on the news: in case you couldn’t tell.
And a couple of recent things caught my eye.
Firstly?
Two of the technology industry’s big names, Google and Microsoft, are cutting a lot of jobs, between them.
That’s worrying: especially when you consider they make the operating systems for a lot of phones and computers.
Secondly?
I have type two diabetes: so tend to keep an eye peeled for news about it.
I saw this, yesterday.
It seems that the University of Cambridge has developed a very experimental artificial pancreas: that has been used on a group of twenty-six people, and shown to be helpful.
I’m interested: of course I am.
Any thing that can lower my blood sugar levels, reduce the medication* I’m on and possibly prevent me going blind and losing a foot?
Is welcome.
I’m tempted to ask about volunteering for it.
But? It’s possibly more sensible not to.
The process is VERY experimental!
Let’s move on, shall we?
Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga†, Mum‡ and Debbi^ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.
Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?
Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.
Q1) During the War on Drugs, 21st January, 1999, saw the US Coastguard seize 4,300 kilograms of what: cocaine, heroin or cannabis? Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q2) 21st January, 2009, saw the Israeli army withdraw from where: the Golan Heights, West Bank or Gaza Strip?
Q3) During the Second World War, 21st January, 1943 saw the bridge over the Asopos River destroyed: by members of Britain’s SOE. The SOE were the Special Operations … what?
Q4) Quebec adopted its flag on 21st January, 1948. The flag features a white cross, and four white Fleur-de-lis. On what colour background?
Q5) Finally … ? The Emley Moor transmitting station began broadcasting. On 21st January of which year of the 1970s?
Q1) The oldest person to be elected President of the USA was inaugurated on 20th January, 2021. Who IS that president? Here’s a thought …
A1) Joe Biden.
Q2) The youngest person to be elected as US president, was inaugurated on 20th January, 1961. Who was that President?
A2) John F. Kennedy.
Q3) 20th January is the feast day of Saint Sebastian. He’s a patron saint of whom: archers, butchers or cobblers?
A3) Archers. (He never became President.)
Q4) The High Court of Justice (1649) start its trial: on 20th January, 1649. Its trial of whom: Charles 1st, Oliver Cromwell or James 6th and 1st?
A4) Charles 1st. (Who’d been King … rather than president.)
Q5) Finally … ? 20th January, 1921, saw where adopt its first constitution: Greece, Turkey or Cyprus?
A5) Turkey. None of their presidents are American.
“We’re all born bald, baby.”And a song …
Telly Savalas, January 21, 1922 – January 22, 1994.
Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.
Decisions about scores are final.
Thank you for coming: have a good day.
* I’m on Metformin, Dapagliflozin and Semaglutide. Semaglutide … has its own problems. There’s a shortage of the stuff! Apparently, at least one Kadashian’s been rumoured to use it for weigh loss.
† I would love to know, myself, Olga: but I think that’s the general idea. Get shot with arrows, wind up as patron saint of archers. Saint Dymphna’s another one: her father was abusive, and she ended up as the patron saint of incest victims. That still doesn’t explain Saint Guinefort. He was a greyhound …
I think Cecil Rhodes is going to be problematic, for years. The Scholarship’s a good idea. But some of his views would’ve got Hitler’s approval! (Eric Gill’s another one. He abused his daughter for years: and yet, we still use the Gill Sans typeface.)
‡ Hello, Mum!
^ I’m saying nothing, Debbi! (Oh, did I mention I’ve started watching The Crusade, the First Doctor story? It’s interesting.)

Q5) 1971. I’ve seen it many times, as I used to live around that area.
Yes, there are many problematic figures, and it is difficult to know what to do for the best. The saying, don't look at a gift horse in the mouth comes to mind, although perhaps the easiest thing would be to change the name. (I am aware there must be people behind it, but changing the name as a way of atonement...)
The study sounds good, although I imagine it will take a fair bit of fine-tuning. I imagine they will start with people who are already on insulin nonetheless, but it makes sense.
I've read that there are problems getting supplies of the injection because a lot of idiots are using it as a weight loss weight, and people who need it for the illness can't always access it. Money talks, as usual!
