Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 30-7-2016: Baghdad.

Ha!

I should be so lucky!

I’ve just noticed — on the BBC’s news site — that a ticket in the UK has one this weeks Euromillions jackpot some £61 million.

I could possibly easily check my ticket: to see if mine’s the winner.

But I get a little superstitious about these things.

However, superstitious or otherwise?

I VERY much doubt that’s me that’s won the thing: I REALLY don’t get that lucky.

Wouldn’t it be nice though?

I’d LOVE to be able to buy my flat … !

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: scoring ten out of ten in the process.   The day also saw Olga† letting us know what’s happening for her.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q1) 30th July saw the founding — and the start of construction — of Baghdad.   In which year: 762 AD, 763 or 764?
Q2) What was the name of the man who founded Baghdad?
Q3) He was an Abbasid what: Sultan, Emir or Caliph?
Q4) Baghdad, itself, is on which river: the Thames, Mississippi or Tigris?
Q5) The city’s original core is called what: the Square, Round or Triangular, City?
Q6) That core contained a famed library and academic centre: called the House of … what?
Q7) The city contains the al-Kādhimiya … what?
Q8) Baghdad is twinned with the city of Beirut.   Where is Beirut?
Q9) Which Baghdad street is noted for the number of book-sellers?
Q10) Finally … Baghdad is the capital of which modern republic?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 29th July saw the founder of the Scouting movement set up the original Scout Camp.   The Camp was on Brownsea Island: in WHICH Harbour?
A1) Poole Harbour.
Q2) Town, harbour and island are in which English county?
A2) Dorset.
Q3) The founder of the Scouts — and organizer of the camp — was Lieutenant General Sir Robert whom?
A3) Sir Robert Baden-Powell.   (The Powell part of the name rhymes with Noel: rather than with the phrase ‘HOW well’.)
Q4) The Camp formally started on which date in August?
A4) 1st August.
Q5) Sir Robert wrote the book that’s considered the basic text of Scouting.   It’s called Scouting for whom … ?
A5) ‘Scouting for Boys’.   (It’s not actually ON Project Gutenberg: although the site DOES have Sir Robert’s ‘My Adventures as a Spy’.   Sounds fun … )
Q6) That book was first published in which year?
A6) 1908.
Q7) Sir Robert formed his ideas on Scouting, whilst in the British Army.   Specifically, during the Siege of Mafeking.   Mafeking is in which African country?
A7) South Africa.
Q8) In the UK, the Girl Guides are the female branch of the Scout movement.   What’s the junior branch of the Guides called?
A8) The Brownies.   (Billy Connelly in a Brownie outfit?   Not a pretty sight.)
Q9) Who wrote and performed the satirical song, Be Prepared?
A9) Tom Lehrer.
Q10) In the Peanuts comic strip, Woodstock the bird, and some of his friends, are members of a Scout troop led by which beagle?
A10) Snoopy.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“I stayed in Baghdad every summer until I was 14. My dad’s sister is still there, but many of my relatives have managed to get out. People forget that there are still people there who are not radicalized in any particular direction, trying to live normal lives in a very difficult situation.”
Andy Serkis.
And this song: apparently, a traditional one about the city …

Have a good Saturday.

*        It’d be good to get the gang together, I know that, Debbi.   I DO know my family used to say my mother looked a bit like newsreader, Angela Rippon: been a while since THAT thought’s cropped!   And, yes … Repo Man’s SO silly, I expected THIS …

†        We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for you, Olga!   (Personally?   I’d be seeing the sights, if possible: I’ve not actually been to the Science Museum for years: and would LOVE to see what Jude thinks of the place.)
