Good Omens — Series 1: Episode 2 — The Book — A Review

26th June, 2019.

Yep: it’s a thing …

I have a kitchen sink that’s misbehaving: and upsurged a couple of times, tonight.

And yes: I have managed to clean that sink.

And unblock the drain.

All to no avail.

I still get upsurging.

And … ?

On the advise of my landlord’s out of hours service?

It’s something I’m going to have to chase up in the morning.

I just hope it doesn’t get so bad, it floods the place.

At any rate … ?

At any rate, it’s another quiet night: which means another episode of …

Good Omens …

Episode 2 — The Book — makes a few introductions …

Specifically to Agnes Nutter (Josie Lawrence), a witch who’s determined that — should she be burnt at the stake — she’ll take the Witchfinder who did it with her.

She does.

As she has a considerable amount of gunpowder and roofing nails hidden in her petticoats.

And?

And instructions in her will: to leave the last remaining copy of her book of prophecies — The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch — to her daughter: with the injunction it gets passed down to her descendants.

The last of those … ?

Is Anathema Device (Adria Arjona): who’s just moved into Lower Tadsfield.

Not long before Crowley and Aziraphale (David Tennant and Michael Sheen) get there.

They’ve worked out that the Antichrist (Adam Young: Sam Taylor Buck) is not happily causing havoc in the US, are going to see the End of the World, unless they find him …

After figuring out there’s been a mistake …

Now …

I have to admit, I’m always nervous about the film or TV series of the book.

Especially with the casting: and with the plot.

Thus far?

Thus far, I can’t fault what’s what’s been done with the plot: what we’ve seen on screen is all in the book.

Casting wise?

I think we all have our own ideas about how some characters are meant to be.

Witchfinder Sergeant Shadwell, for example?

I always imagined the character as something like Private Frazer in Dad’s Army.

And Agnes?   Despite being extremely dead, I’d mentally seen her as something like another Pratchett character, Granny Esme Weatherwax*.

So … ?

I was more than a little concerned that Michael McKean and Josie Lawrence weren’t going to be up to snuff.

I needn’t have worried.

They worked.

Frankly?

The fact this series seems to be sticking to the plot, and making it work for TV, AND has a great cast?

What CAN I tell you?

Apart from roll on Episode 3 … !

*        Don’t quote me, but I seem to recall that Sir Terry had Agnes’ death planned for Granny: if, as and when needed.   Then realised he’d painted himself into a corner, if he ever planned to kill Granny off.
