Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 16-6-2021: Sussex Day.

16th June, 2021.

Yes!

I’m now officially boiling washing some t-shirts!

Even as we speak, I’ve got the oven on, with the Official Big Pot happily working away.

Boiling t-shirts that got half done, yesterday: when my washing outright died on me.

Thankfully?

I’m getting some help to pay for an engineer: he’s coming on Friday.

Hopefully?

It’s going to be something cheap …

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum†, Edith‡ and Debbi^ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, Mum on four and Edith on three.

The day also saw Trevor leaving us — and Edith — a message.

Let’s see how they, and you, does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        16th June is Sussex Day.   Sussex is in the southern part of which of the UK’s countries: Scotland, England, Northern Ireland or Wales?

Q2)        Sussex Day is on the feast day of the county’s patron saint.   That saint is Saint Richard of where: Brighton, Chicester or Downton?

Q3)        Modern Sussex is divided into two counties.   Name one of them.

Q4)        The flag of Sussex — as well as the two coats of arms — have birds on them.   What birds: martlets, sparrows or choughs?

Q5)        Finally?   Egremont Russet, Knobbed Russet and the Crawley Reinette are from Sussex.   They’re all what: apples, oranges or pears?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        Bilbao was founded: on 15th June, 1300.   It’s in which Spanish community: the Basque Country, Asturias or Navarre?
A1)        The Basque Country.

Q2)        There’s two official languages spoken in Bilbao.   Spanish is one.   What’s the other: Basque, Catalan or Valencian?
A2)        Basque.

Q3)        Athletic Bilbao play what: football, American Football or Australian rules Football?
A3)        Football.

Q4)        Bilbao is twinned with the city of Qingdao.   Qingdao is in which Asian nation … ?
A4)        China.

Q5)        Finally … ?   The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum that specialises in what: Contemporary art, Medieval Art or Renaissance art?
A5)        Contemporary art.
Here’s a thought …
Unofficial motto of Sussex.
And, even if it’s not Christmas? A carol …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Feel free to share today’s video Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Actually, the meeting went well, Olga: although my case worker looks a lot younger than she sounds!   And there were a LOT of spit screens around: the big plastic screens?   The up side is that we were aloud to take our masks off.
I managed to do two extra things, yesterday.   Get to the surgery to get them to chase up the eye test: if it’s like last time, it’ll be at one of the town’s other GP surgery’s, as that’s the only one with rooms to rent.
Oh … and I got in touch with a washing machine engineer …
Oh, I’ve left you a reply about the job!   (A friend has asked me why someone would pay that much for a laptop.   I’ve had to tell him about some of Dell’s Alienware range.   There’s literally cheaper Macs!)

†        Hello, Mum!   (Hopefully, the engineer will be cheap!)

‡        He managed to phone me, last night, Edith.   Hopefully, the story will go into print — or online — today.
Oh, as far as I can tell, Edith, yes, You’ll Never Walk Alone is from Carousel: but the best known version — here in the UK — is by Gerry and the Pacemakers.   Hopefully, Trevor will be able to confirm that for us.   (Oh, there’s a version in The Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy.)
I think I’m with you, on Spanish Train: it is up-beat, at the end, isn’t … ?   Remind me to play you Don’t Play the Ferryman, and Patricia the Stripper.   It’s the the only song by Chris de Burgh to get banned in Ireland!

That’s a thought, Edith? Did you ever see Something Wicked This Way Comes?

I always think De Burgh’s Spanish Train looks like that …

Edith and Paul you are both correct. At the height of the Mersey beat era (The Beatles,Cilla Black, Freddie and the dreamers and others) Gerry and the Pacemakers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerry_and_the_Pacemakers ) had a number one with the song. Shortly afterwards the popular end of the ground at Liverpool began signing it as the team came out to play. This got extended to end of matches and when the team were in great danger. The most famous occasion was in Istanbul Turkey in a European Champions League final when Liverpool were 3 - 0 down to the champions of Italy at half time. The Liverpool fans rallied the team round by singing YNWA and Liverpool came back to be 3 - 3 at the final whistle. There were no goals in the 30 minutes extra time but Liverpool won the Penalty shoot out and the cup.

Debbi that recording has both the German teams supports and the Liverpool scousers signing the song.

The accent has more Irish influence than Scottish. Indeed Liverpool has been called the Capital of Ireland. The word Scouse comes from the dish Lobscouse (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scouse_(food). A dish I think Paul can cook.

Yes, I saw your friend's comment. I've just come back from my class with Jordi, so I'll check now. You're right about Carousel. You'll Never Walk Alone comes from that Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical. I studied their musicals and wrote about some of them for a course on the American Musical I studied when I was in the States. (It is a story with ghosts and all, but hey...)
