Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 9th May, 2019

9th June, 2019.

Yes: it’s officially a quiet Sunday morning.

And frankly?

I’m not expecting much more than dinner with my family — Jude will get noisy! — and possibly some interesting TV.

I have to admit, having fun floating around Quora.com.

But, over the past few months?

I’ve been watching the Spanish series, El Ministerio del Tiempo.

Frankly, it’s fantastic: writing, production, cast, absolutely spot on.

And?

I have have to admit, Nacho Fresneda, as Alonso, the hot tempered veteran tercio*?

Is a stunning performance, and — for my money? — the heart of the show … !

Go watch, folks!

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga†, and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga scoring five out of five and Debbi on five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q1) 9th June, 1978, saw which church open its priesthood to ‘all worthy men’: including black people?
Q2) 9th June, 1672, saw the birth of Tsar Peter the Great.   Which Russian city was his capital?
Q3) The first broadcast from the House of Commons were made on 9th June, 1975.   The Secretary of State for Industry was the first minister question that day.   Who was the Secretary of State for Industry?
Q4) 9th June, 1836, saw the birth of the first woman to become a qualified doctor in the UK.   Who was she?
Q5) Finally … ?   9th June, 1967, saw Israel capture what, from Syria?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 8th May saw the death of Islam’s founder, Muhammad.   In which city?
A1) Medina.
Q2) In which year?
A2) 632 AD: approximately Year 10/11, in the Islamic calendar.
Q3) Muhammed was born in which city?
A3) Mecca.
Q4) He’s said to have given Islam’s holy book by the Angel Gabriel.   What’s that book called?
A4) The Qu’ran.   (Also spelt Quran, or Koran.  It’s القرآن, in Arabic.)

A5) Prophet.
Here’s a thought …
“Alas! I have civilised my own subjects; I have conquered other nations; yet I have not been able to civilise or to conquer myself”.
Tsar Peter the Great, 9 June 1672 – 8 February, 1725.
And a Cole Porter song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        I get the impression that the Tercios weren’t Habsburg Spain’s equivalent to the SAS.   More like the Paratroop Regiment, or the various Commando units: the sort of group that SAS recruit from.

†        I’m keeping my fingers crossed, Olga: hopefully … !   Oh, by the way … look what popped up in a Google search …

‡        I can imagine, Debbi!   Remind me to look out for Good Omens, Debbi, once El Ministerio del Tiempo series three’s done.   I might have to sign up for that Amazon free trial, just the once …

Q2) Saint Petersburg (He’s all over the city, for sure)
Q3) Tony Benn
Q4) Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (What a remarkable woman!)
Q5) The Golan Heights.
I won’t pretend to understand this fully, but I thought you might find it interesting, if you hadn’t seen it.

And I’m with you on the Alonso front. The actor is wonderful and the character adapts to the huge jump in time (while remaining the moral centre of the action). I had heard about the new series, although they haven’t been very specific. Cayetana is very busy all over the shop (she is the presenter of a movie programme regularly and runs interviews with some pretty interesting people, including one I saw with Viggo Mortensen (who was born in Argentina and speaks very good Spanish apart from many other things).
