Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 5-9-2019: On The Blower

5th September, 2019.

Yes … Deep thought …

I’ve got an interview pencilled in, for tomorrow.

One I’ve got to think about …

As it’s for a bookmakers I had an interview for, a couple of months ago.

Indeed, it’s with the same shop manager.

I was unsuccessful, last time.

In point of fact, the manager told me that — one way or the other — I’d be contacted on the following Monday.

I didn’t hear a thing, so assumed I was unsuccessful.

Given the branch is quite some distance away?

I’m sorely tempted to email them, and cancel: I’m convinced I’ll get the same response …

~≈§≈~

Except, of course?

My email’s are down.

As are quite a lot of BT customers.

I — and quite a few other people — are rather annoyed about that …

~≈§≈~

In the midst of all that … ?

I’ve got Radio Four’s Today programme on in the background.

In a news item, today, it seems a team at Oxford have found DNA links to left-handedness.

Something to do with cell structure: that apparently means we left-handers have brain-structures the mean we’re better with verbal skills.

Or, and — according to the version in the last Radio Four bulletin — slightly more likely to develop schizophrenia.

Not something I have a problem with, but I’ve seen that mentioned before.

Frankly?

It’s an interesting piece to see.

~≈§≈~

Oh, and JUST a quick final thought?

I had the news channel on, yesterday: watching the riot in the House of Commons.

This caught my attention …

That was one hell of a thing to see …

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Badwolf*, Olga†, and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with all three scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) Britain’s first trunk call from a pay phone took place on 5th September.   In which year of the 1950s?
Q2) In which city: Aberdeen, Bristol or Chelmsford?
Q3) That call was a trunk call.   In other words, made without a what: handset, phone line or operator?
Q4) What was the largest coin the original box took: 3d, 6d or 1 shilling?
Q5) The classic British phone box — the K1 to K8 models — were usually painted what colour?
Q6) Cream coloured phone boxes were used where: Inverness, Kingston upon Hull or London?
Q7) The KX series are the UK’s recent model of phone box.   What, technically, could you do in a KX box … that you couldn’t in a K series box?
Q8) Gilbert MacKenzie Trench designed a well known type of blue phone box.   That box is now featured in which TV show?
Q9) In which film is Colin Farrell menaced by a sniper?
Q10) Finally … ?   Many phone boxes are being phased out: as more of us use what?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) The longest running game show in the USA debuted on 4th September: what’s it called?
Q2) It debuted in which year of the 1970s?
A2) 1972.
Q3) The original host was a man called Bob Barker.   The current host is Drew … who?
A3) Drew Carey.
Q4) This 1970s version of the show is the second version.   The original start in which year of the 1950s?
A4) 1956.
Q5) Finally … ?   This version of the show is aired on which US channel: ABC, NBC or CBS?
A5) CBS.
Here’s a thought …
“If we discovered that we only had five minutes left to say all that we wanted to say, every telephone booth would be occupied by people calling other people to stammer that they loved them.” Christopher Morley.
And a playlist …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Morning, Anne!   How’s the day … ?

†        Oh, dear … Possible general elections, Olga … Parliament’s debating one as we speak.   It’s going to take weeks.   What IS the Spanish word for logjam?   Because it sounds we’re both staring at one!   I still think trying those Catalan politicians is … unwise, at least.   And guaranteed to cause long term resentment.   You have to love a feedback loop … (Oh, did you catch the item about left handedness?   It seems to confirm the schizophrenia link.)

‡        I don’t think, Debbi: therefore I’m not!   Ummm … Did that line work … ?   (Oh, did you see the bit about left-handedness?   That grabbed my attention.)

Q1) 1959
Q2) Bristol
Q3) operator
Q4) 1 shilling
Q5) Red
Q6) Kingston upon Hull
Q7) I’m not sure about this question. You could use a card (although they had changed some of the phones in red kiosks to introduce that), you could use it if you were on a wheelchair as well…. Broadband came later, so I’m not sure…
Q8) Doctor Who
Q9) Phone Booth (I found the movie rather silly. Yes, it has a good pace, but the ending I found quite silly. Really? With so many criminals and horrible people why pick up on somebody like him?)
Q10) Mobile phones
Oh, we shall see about the elections. (By the way, atolladero is a possible translation). There are some positive moves and some very stubborn people. Thanks for the video (well done!), and interesting about left-handedness... We know so little about genes that it's difficult to tell what anything means. It's a bit like statistics at this point. It's all down to interpretation.
I'm not sure if you caught the information about Blanca Fernández Ochoa. They've found a body and it seems to be hers, but the circumstances of her death are far from clear. Sad news.
Oh, good luck with the interview if you decide to go, although I fully understand your reluctance given the circumstances.

hello, my day is entertaining, been for a walk some exercise, my ex mom inlaw is back out of hospital again, she had issues with her heart again. I think I'm still living in the dark ages, I still use call box when out, as I don't own a mobile yes, mom tried to get me one but I'm, not that bothered. I have a landline but never owned a cell phone in 7 years lol
