Star Trek Picard — Series 1 Episode 2 — Maps and Legends — A Review

20th March, 2020.

It’s officially official: I’m unemployed.

But you knew that, anyway: especially if you’ve been following me for a while.

So … ?

I don’t get out much.

Given the circumstances?

That’s possibly a good thing.

As the government has informed pubs, bars, restaurants and gyms that they should close up, tonight …

And stay closed for an indefinite amount of time from tomorrow.

That’s going to hurt the industry.

Speaking as an ex barman?

There’s going to be a lot more of us, around.

There’s also my former profession: of pub quiz master.

I know one of two quiz masters, DJs, musicians who are now out of work.

Ans, as self employed … ?

I don’t know if the qualify for the help the government’s offering.

At any rate … ?

Not going out … ?

Not going out means … a lot of things, actually.

But mainly … ?

That I’m going to be the usual thing.

Yes.

Watching a lot of TV.

Tonight … ?   I’ve caught another episode of Star Trek Picard’s first series

Episode 2 — Maps and Legends — opens with a brief summary of episode 1.

Then moves: to a flashback from fourteen earlier, when the Federation’s Utopia Planetia shipbuilding yard were attacked by rebellious synths.

Data style androids.

Moving forward to the modern day … ?

Back to the modern day, and following Dahj’s death, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his housekeeper, Laris (Orla Brady) visit Dahj’s flat: to see what they can find.

Finding it scrubbed clean: with a sole, deeply hidden, clue in Dahj’s answering machine.

Soji, her twin sister?

Is not on Earth.

As we know, but Picard doesn’t and Laris don’t?

Soji (Isa Briones) is working at a wrecked Borg cube: one operated by the Romulans, overseen day to day, by Narak (Harry Treadaway) … and one that’s seemingly devoted to reclaiming Borg drones back to some form of normality.

Surgically.

Little knowing that her lover, Narak … ?   Is also the director of the project.

Back on Earth?   Back on Earth, Picard has had a lot of discussion with Laris, and Zhaban (Jamie McShane).

Both are Romulan refugees: and both former members of the Til Shiar, the Romulan Secret Police.

Who’ve been able to tell the Admiral they believe that Dahj’s killer’s are members of the Zhat Vash: a secretive Romulan cabal opposed to the use of synthetics.

And who would be targeting Soji, next.

Picard … ?   Feels he has to help her, but is refused an official Starfleet ship by Admiral Kirsten Clancy (Ann Magnuson).

There’s only one thing for it.

Putting his own team, together.

Without alerting the likes of Lt. Rizzo (Peyton List).

Things are getting messy.

Now … did I enjoy Maps and Legends?

Yes I did.

Episode one was an enjoyable watch: setting up the first series, and introducing us to the most recent version of the Trek Universe …

And adding more to Picard’s back story … and to the unfolding tale.

I’m am two episodes in … and seriously want more …
