Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 14-11-2022 — Laser Beams.

14th November, 2022: Laser Beams.

Yep: it’s Monday.

And, if I’m late posting this … ?

It’s because I’ve just had a phone meeting with my physio-therapist, and sent up another.

So that’s all good.

I’ve also got a reminder set up on my TV.

The new series of I’m Sorry, I Haven’t a Clue starts, tonight, and I’d hate to miss it.

I can only hope there’s a game of Mornington Crescent: it’s been scandalously missing!

Now … about that earworm …

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        14th November saw Theodore Maiman granted the patent for his design of laser.   In which year of the 1960s?

Q2)        His version focused light with a synthetic what: ruby, sapphire or emerald?

Q3)        Laser beams with that kind of crystal are what colour: red, blue or green?

Q4)        Laser is an acronym.   One that stands for ‘light amplification by stimulated emission of … ’what?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Lasers are complicated beams of light.   Masers complicated what: microwaves, milliwatts or megabytes?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        13th November is the feast day of Saint Homobonus.   He’s the patron saint of whom: scientists, teachers or business people?
A1)        Business people.

Q2)        13th November is also the feast day of Agostina Livia Pietrantoni.   She’s a patron saint of whom: shoe makers, nurses or pilots?
A2)        Nurses.

Q3)        13th November, 1922, saw the US Supreme Court rule in favour of what: abortion, mandatory vaccinations or segregated schools?
A3)        Mandatory vaccination.

Q4)        13th November, 1971, saw the Mariner 9 probe go into orbit.   Around where: Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Mercury?
A4)        Mars.

Q5)        Finally … ?   13th October, 1994, saw Sweden vote to join where: the EU, the African Union or the Women’s Institute?
A5)        The EU.
Here’s a thought …
“It was strange, in a way, because there were no ideas involved in the laser that weren’t already known by somebody 25 years before lasers were discovered.   The ideas were all there; just, nobody put it together.”
Charles H. Townes.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s  Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!

I might just have to have a look at that, then, Olga: we’ll see.   And Montjuïc looks like one hell of a climb: the left hand face looks steep!

Sounds like a complicated movie, Debbi!   But worth the time, yes?   Oh, I’m going to be watching another episode of The Abominable Snowmen, tonight: it’s looking good!
Enjoy Night Watch: the original cover’s based on a painting by Rembrandt.   (Chap with the eyepatch, centre stage?   Is Sam Vimes.   The monk?   Is Lu Tze.   The child in the battered top hat is Nobby.   Chap on the extreme right hand side of the picture — black hat, black coat — is Captain Findthee Swing.   Chap behind and to the left of Lu Tze, with the bloody knives, is Carcer, the villain of the piece.     Unfortunately?   There’s at least one like Carcer in every pub.   I could name more: but it’s been a while …)

Q2) ruby

Q3) red

Q4) radiation

Q5) Microwaves
Both, Montjuïc and Tibidabo are relatively small hills, but quite steep, considering their relative sizes. Good views from both, though.
I'm having a bit of a confusing day, so far, but let's hope for the best.
