24th November, 2022.
I have to admit, I heard some sad news, yesterday.
Wilko Johnson* — founder member of Dr Feelgood, and influential guitarist — died on Monday.
The man was someone I’d seen playing at the Essex Arms, many times, when I worked there.
Wilko could be … awkward, sometimes.
But could pack the place.
And play like nothing else I’d ever seen, and was the guitarist who went on to inspire lord knows how many musicians.
Especially the punks of the 1970s.
I can appreciate that: I could never watch him play, without thinking “Well, I could do that.”
Strange? Yes.
Inspiring?
Definitely!

On a personal note?
I didn’t got shopping, yesterday: I’m going to do that, today.
I did manage to pay off my bills, though.
Usually?
I pay a lot of them by swipe card: it means I don’t go accidentally overdrawn, and get a penalty charge.
The downside? Is that I end up visiting three different shops: as each shop’s PayPoint terminal does different things.
One shop does TV licenses, but not the cost of living vouchers: another doesn’t take the license fee, but will take pre-payment keys, and the vouchers.
And, in the case of my local post office?
They can take rent, and council tax, bills: and mobile phone top ups.
But their long out-of-order terminal hasn’t accepted gas and electric pre-payment keys.
Since last December.
Yesterday, though?
I walked into the Post Office to pay my rent, and phone bills … and asked about gas and electricity.
And was incredibly pleased when I found out the terminal had been repaired: and I could pay, there and then.
I’m a happy bunny: who hasn’t had to tramp all over the high street!
Let’s move on, shall we?
Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga†, Mum‡ and Debbi^ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.
Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?
Q1) 24th November is the feast day of Saint Colmán of Cloyne. Cloyne is in which Irish county: Cork, Galway or Mayo?Q2) 24th November saw the formal end of Colombia’s Civil War: with the signing of various peace deals and ceasefires by the Colombian Government, and various rebel groups. 24th November of which year: 2016, 2017 or 2018?Q3) 24th November saw the Governor of Texas authorise a what: a mounted police force, a bureau of investigation or a Coast Guard?Q4) That Was the Week That Was was first broadcast on 24th November, 1962. On which (then) channel: BBC or ITV?Q5) Finally … ? The command module of which Apollo mission splashed down on 24th November, 1969: Apollo 11, 12 or 13?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) The first episode of Doctor Who was broadcast: on 23rd November, 1963. What was it called: An Unearthly Child, The Dead Planet or The Edge of Destruction?Q2) More to the point? Who takes over as the 14th Doctor, in 2023?Q3) Saint Georges Day is marked on the 23rd November. Where: Georgia, Catalonia or England?A3) Georgia.Q4) 23rd November, 1982, saw the birth of sprinter, Asafa Powell. He specialises in which distance: 100 metres, 200 metres or 400 metres?A4) 100 metres. (I get the impression he’s Usain Bolt’s only serious competition.)Q5) Finally … ? 23rd November, 1887, saw the birth of actor Boris Karloff. He played an iconic monster in 1931. In which film: The Mummy, Dracula or Frankenstein?A5) Frankenstein.
Here’s a thought …
“Sport can bring communities together and can release a lot of pent-up emotions.”Ian Botham, born 24 November 1955.
And a song …
Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.
Decisions about scores are final.
Thank you for coming: have a good day.
* I read one piece on Wilko in the Evening Standard, many years ago. The reviewer described Wilko’s stage moves as a ‘zombie war dance.’ I knew exactly what the man meant! It’s exactly the same moves Wilko made, when his Game of Thrones character executed Sean Bean.
† She was? I live and learn, Olga. It also means there’s a connection — of sorts — between Karloff and Jodie Foster. She played Leonowens in Anna and the King.
And yes: shopping can be nasty! I decided not to go, yesterday. Even though I didn’t have to go as far, I still didn’t fancy wandering around Sainsbury’s for an hour. I can get there, earlier, today!
It can be nasty, I know that: a friend’s grandfather had it. From the little I know, and from what Debbi’s told me? Fox has also picked up dystonia in his leg: I believe it’s a side effect of the Parkinson’s. (There was a comedy show he appeared in: where he plays the main character’s upstairs neighbour. The neighbour goes to him to complain about the noise: and it turns out it’s Fox’s dodgy leg.)
‡ Hello, Mum! (Ncuti Gatwa’s playing the Fifteenth Doctor, Mum.)
^ If it’s ANY help, Debbi? I’m following you! The place has toots, instead of tweets. The German chap that founded the place didn’t know about the American English definition of the word. Oh, and I think persuading Olga to join is going to be a tough job!
Hmmm … can you save me a jar of sauce, please … ?

Sorry about the news about Wilko, although at least you saw him live. Many didn't get such a chance. Oh, and good news on the Post Office finally getting their machine fixed. I guess a year isn't that long...

Oh, hey, cool! Just spent all morning trying to figure out my email newsletter service. *sigh* Hopefully, I'll figure out Mastodon. Eventually.
Happy Thursday! We're having Cornish hens instead of turkey. It's just the two of us, so ... why make a whole turkey?
I'll save you a jar of cranberry sauce. Feel free to come pick it up. Before I eat it myself. :)
BTW, I'm loving Night Watch!
