Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 13-10-2023 — The Return of the Son of the Valley of Friday 13th!

13th October, 2023: The Return of the Son of the Valley of Friday 13th!

Yes: it’s Friday morning …

And … I’ve had an injection.

Yes: of my once-a-week dose of Trulicity.

Hopefully?

It’s helping.

Oh …

I caught this piece from the BBC’s Archive, yesterday.

There’s a certain amount of irony, there.

The picture behind the presenter is the cover of Runequest*.

I should know, I’ve got a copy.

A copy of the version produced under licence in the UK by Games Workshop: who’s co-founder, Steve Jackson, is interviewed in the article.

Not that there’s any connection.

I think … !

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum†, Olga‡ and Debbi§ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

The day also saw Trevor¶ leaving us a message, here.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        13th October, 2023, is considered unlucky in many parts of the world: as it’s a Friday.   When was 13th October, last a Friday: 2016, 2017 or 2018?

Q2)        A month will have a Friday 13th, if it starts with a what: Sunday, Monday or Tuesday?

Q3)        Who wrote the 1907 novel, Friday the Thirteenth: T. E. Lawrence, T. S. Elliot or T. W. Lawson?

Q4)        The Friday the 13th Crash was a financial crash on Friday, 13th October, 1989.   It’s known to some as what: Black Friday, Blue Friday or Red Friday?

Q5)        Finally … ?   The first Friday the 13th horror film was released when: 1979, 1980 or 1981?

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        Babylon was captured: on 12th October, 539BC: by the armies of Cyrus the Great.   Babylon was on the banks of which river: the Euphrates, Jordan or Tigris?
A1)        The Euphrates.

Q2)        Its conquerer, Cyrus the Great, was the leader of what: the Roman Empire, First Persian Empire or Babylonian Empire?
A2)        The First Persian Empire.

Q3)        Which member of the Sex Pistols was charged with murder: on 12th October, 1978?
A3)        Sid Vicious.

Q4)        12th October, 1968, saw the birth of Hugh Jackman.   He’s recently announced he and his wife are what: having a child, getting divorced or moving house?
A4)        Getting divorced.

Q5)        Finally … ?   The first voyage led by Christopher Columbus made landfall on 12th October, 1492.   On an island now called what: San Salvador, Acklins or Andros?
A5)        San Salvador.

Here’s a thought …
“Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition.   It occurs when the 13th day of the month in the Gregorian calendar falls on a Friday, which happens at least once every year but can occur up to three times in the same year.”
From the Wikipedia entry on the day.
And an EP by the Damned …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        OK, about that cover … ?   Later editions of the game had covers that weren’t so revealing: as the one pictured had a few complaints‖!

        Hello, Mum!

Yeah … it sounds similar to my part of town ten years ago, Olga.   There were a lot of what they used call HMOs, Home under Multiple Occupation: where landlords would rent out individual rooms.   The places only ever had one washing machine between so many people: so laundrettes could make money.   We’ve had a lot of flats built, since then.
And, yeah: I’m looking forward to Monday!

§        Strictly speaking, the BBC doesn’t run on taxes, Debbi.   Most of it is publicly funded by the license fee on TV sets: and devices capable of accessing the iPlayer.   Oh, the World Service gets some government funding from the Foreign Office: but most of the cash is from the TV License, and the profits from BBC Studios.
Now I think of it?   Elon Musk caused a bit of a stink in an interview with the BBC: by saying exactly that, by describing it as “funded by government money”.   He had to backtrack, and revise the phrase to public money, after a backlash.
(I’m telling a lawyer about wording!   Ha!)

        I honestly couldn’t tell you, Trevor … !

‖        The games were usually bought by a lot of teenaged boys, so pictures of half naked women were common: to the point such pictures got called ‘bikini babes’.   No, don’t google the phrase!!!!!!!!

Q3) T. W. Lawson

Q4) Black Friday

One of my cousins and his wife (the brother of the cousin who lives nearby) have come for a visit. They are staying with him, but we'll going for lunch together a bit later. They are coming here, so it shouldn't be too disruptive, and we're going to a restaurant.

Wording is important. That's why I asked. I have no idea how the BBC the operates, but I have a fuller picture now.

I shall have to watch my language. :)

It would be interesting to study systems in other countries, because our system is hardly perfect. :) What an understatement.
