Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 8-3-2020: The CD

8th March, 2020.

Yes: I’ve got one last birthday present to come.

Dinner with the family, today.

At a little place in town I’ve never heard of.

It should be good.

Talking of which … ?

I went up to Brentwood Library, yesterday.   To reassure myself the laptop could connect up to the Library’s wi-fi.

It could.

I know I was … ummm … poking around, as well.

And cam across this page.

Don’t bother trying to connect to it, you won’t with out a copy of TorBrowser.

Basically?

The link is a proxy — an indirect connection — to Pirate Bay.

Pirate Bay?   Allows us to download torrent files: specialised files that let you download various types of content.

Usually in conjunction with a torrent client: the type of app that does the downloading.

I downloaded the version of Ubuntu on my laptop via a torrent file, to give you an example.

But, famously?   The Torrent technique can also be used to download copyrighted material — movies, TV shows, what have you — for free: from sites like Pirate Bay, KAT, LimeTorrent, and the recently reestablished Demonoid.

So — in line with a pair of court orders from a few years ago — internet service providers are supposed to block access to them, and their proxies.

Given that?

How I managed to get through to a Pirate Bay proxy, yesterday?

I really don’t know …

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 8th March, 1979, saw the first demonstration of the CD.   The CD is a compact … what?
Q2) This introduction was made by one of the CD’s designers.   Which designer: Phillips, Sony or JVC?
Q3) The CD is read by a laser.   What colour laser?
Q4) CDs — along side DVDs and Blu-rays — are known as what: optical, ophthalmic or Oenologic?
Q5) Finally … ?   CDs were invented to play what: music, video or games?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 7th March saw the UK’s House of Commons vote for a one hundred percent elected House of what?
A1) Lords.
Q2) That house is the what: upper or lower house?
A2) The Upper House.
Q3) It’s known as the ‘Other Place’. And as the house — or Chamber — of what: Peers, Equals or Nobles?
A3) Peers.
Q4) The Other Place considers laws … and MeasuresMeasures submitted by the Lords Spiritual.   Those lords are senior members of what?
Q5) Finally … ?   The presiding officer of the House is the Speaker.   What does the Speaker sit on?
Here’s a thought …
“People should just buy a CD and rip it. You are legal then.”
Bill Gates‡.
(You can find the quote, here …)

And an album^ …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        OK, Olga: we’ll catch you when you’re in.   Have fun on that walk!

†        I hope it is, Debbi!   I got the cheaper version!

‡        Given I’ve mentioned piracy, today … ?   That quote — picked a couple of weeks ago — seems … apt … !

^        It was the first million selling CD.
