Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18th June, 2023.

Which means it’s the day after Saturday.

Here’s hoping you enjoy that!

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        18th June is Sustainable Gastronomy Day.   According to whom: the EU, UN or OAU?

Q2)        18th June is the UN’s International Day for Countering what: Hate Speech, Sexism or Slavery?

Q3)        18th June, 1983, saw Sally Ride become the USA’s first female astronaut: when she went into space on which Space Shuttle?

Q5)        Finally … ?   18th June, 1901, saw the birth of Anastasia Romanova: youngest daughter of Nicholas 2nd of Russia.   Anastasia was a grand … what?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        17th June saw the birth of composer, Igor Stravinsky.   In which year of the 1880s?
A1)        1882. (That date is according to the Gregorian calendar.   He was born on the 5th: according to the Julian Calendar.)

Q2)        He was born in which Russian city: Moscow, Saint Petersburg or Kazan?
A2)        Saint Petersburg.

Q3)        Which of Stravinsky’s early works caused a near riot: The Firebird, Petrushka or The Rite of Spring?
A3)        The Rite of Spring.

Q4)        Stravinsky’s considered a big figure in what sort of music: modernism, impressionism or neoclassicism?
A4)        Modernism.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Toward’s the end of his life, Stravinsky experimented with what’s called Twelve Tone Technique.   The technique is also called twelve tone what: serialism, cacophony or flattened fifths?
A5)        Twelve tone serialism.   (It’s very distinct from serialism: Frank Zappa was a fan of the latter.)
Here’s a thought …
“Of what use is freedom of speech to those who fear to offend?”
Roger Ebert, June 18, 1942 – April 4, 2013.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        That it would, Olga.   I’m going to be in town, tomorrow: so I can always look in and ask.

        Hello, Mum!

I think surrealism has more paint, Debbi …

The event yesterday went well, I think, although the initial write up for it only talked about some workshops and some speeches in the morning, but they also had a paella (the third event in a row I've done where they've had a paella, and the second one where the paella is a vegan one), and several music groups playing in the afternoon, but I didn't stay for that. Neighbours from the blocks affected spoke, and it is quite a terrible situation, as the old buildings are being taken over by big companies who kick everybody out (a lot of the people are only renting), and then refurbish them and set them up as fancy apartments for short-lettings, that bring much more money in. (They are not giving any new licenses for touristic apartments in Barcelona, but there is a gap in the law about short-term lets). Basically, the neighbours who've been living there for years cannot afford the prices. I was talking to a guy from an organisation defending the neighbours, and he was telling me that they might charge as much as between 2000 and 3000 euros per apartment per month, when the basic salary is just over 1000 euros (1050). And this neighbourhood is not particularly fancy or anything. Because Barcelona is by the sea and it has hills on the other side, it is a bit limited as to expansion (and there are other cities it has already grown into, so building more is not a good option).
I hope you have a great Sunday.
