I’ve possibly mentioned this before now: I’m something of a Terry Pratchett fan.
I have been, ever since I read The Colour of Magic, back in the day.
And … ? His diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s was something I felt deeply upset about.
His support for assisted dying? Something I found hard to accept: but, eventually, came to agree with.
The fact it’s still illegal in the UK? Is understandable.
But something I believe should be changed.
The reason I mention this … ?
Is the news I’ve seen float along my timeline, today: the people of New Zealand have voted in favour of a law that allows for Assisted Dying.
Granted, the UK’s had issues with referendum, over the past few years.
But I think we could learn from that.
Yesterday’s Teaser saw Trevor*, Olga†, Mum‡, Debbi^ and Edithª putting in their answers: with Trevor, Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, Edith on four and Mum on three.
Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?
Q1) Henry Tudor was crowned as King on 30th October. Of where?Q2) In which year of the 1480s?Q3) He was the first King of which dynasty?Q4) He was Henry the what: 6th, 7th or 8th?Q5) Finally … ? Henry was the first monarch from his dynasty. Who was the last?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 29th October, 2015, saw China end what: the one-child policy, Communist rule or the One Country Two Systems principle?A1) The one-child policy. (They’re now using a two child policy, it seems.)Q2) 29th October is Coronation Day. Where: Cambodia, Laos or Vietnam?A2) Cambodia. (Both Laos and Vietnam are socialist republics. Neither give you a day off for a coronation.)Q3) 29th October, 1947, saw the birth of actor, Richard Dreyfuss. He plays Glenn Holland in which film?A3) Mr Holland’s Opus. (That’s unfortunate. Dreyfuss’ picture in the Britannica makes him look like Phil Mitchell.)Q4) 29th October, 1891, saw the birth of actress, singer and comedienne, Fanny Brice. Who played Brice in the 1964 musical, Funny Girl?Q5) Finally … ? A number of gems were stolen on 29th October, 1964: including the gem known as the Star of India. This particular star is a what: ruby, sapphire or diamond?
Here’s a suitable Shakespearean quote …
“We will unite the white rose and the red: —Smile heaven upon this fair conjunction,That long have frown’d upon their emnity!”Act V, scene vHenry, Earl of Richmond: the version of Henry Tudor in Shakespeare’s Richard III.
A clue …
Horrible Histories Song Henry VII from ARKANAMDEUS on Vimeo.
And some Blackadder …
Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.
Feel free to share today’s video Teaser.
Have a good day.
* Bloody hell, that’s a big family, Trevor! And when you say half of Scunthorpe … ?
† Yep: Brentwood Councillors are … well … incompetent is putting it mildly, Olga … !
I love that picture: there’s a version with Dmitri Medvedev, the Russian PM, as well!
As for the Guardia Civil? Did any one ever tell them about the phrase, the usual suspects? Because it sounds like they’ve picked up the phrase from somewhere: by way of Cardinal Ximenez … ! (Now, explaining that to your students could be interesting!)
‡ Hello, Mum!
^ Yep, that’s definitely posh, Debbi! I just wish I could afford one!
ª In my case, Edith, I think I’d watched the video the day before. Sometimes it takes a while for a song to work its way through!

Yes, you're right. Perhaps they'll eventually end up building prison walls around Catalonia and that would save them time. It might also help with COVID-19. Talking about that, although we're not on lockdown at home, people can't leave the community now, big shops, gyms, theatres, etc. are closed, older children are supposed to get their education online as much as possible, and on weekends we won't be able to leave our municipios (we live in Barcelona but are one street across from Hospitalet, as I think I mentioned, but now we aren't supposed to be able to go there over the weekend. It's complicated matters a bit, because I was supposed to go a meeting there tomorrow, but we'll have to do it by phone. Oh well).
I agree with your comments about assisted dying. I understand the objections, but, to be honest, people intent on killing somebody for gain or profit will always find a way, and I can't imagine such a law would result in an increase of such instances, but it could help a lot of people. It's sad to think that at some point that might be the only decision you have left, but having looked after people with very advanced dementia (and having seen people with terminal illnesses and little in the way of quality of life, like my father in his final days), I think it should be an option. Given a choice, I know how I'd rather go.
