Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser  — 6th October, 2020

6th October, 2020.

Alleluia!

We’ve now had the upstairs window repaired.

Although that’s possibly too strong a phrase.

It’s been made safe.

In other words, it’s been temporarily repaired: so that intruders can’t get in, or the thing fall off, until a more permanent repair is put in place.

Here’s hoping that’s quick!

~≈¥≈~

You’ve been keeping you eyes on the news, haven’t you … ?

You’ve realised Cineworld’s temporarily closing its venues.   And that the next James Bond film’s been postponed again.

You’ve possibly realised I’m a fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune.

I was looking forward — even under Covid-19 restriction — to see the most recent film version when it got released in November.

Well … Dune’s been delayed until next year.

And the Odeon chain’s planing to only open at weekends.

Bill and Ted Face the Music had a mixed theatrical and VOD release.

Given the closures, I’m convinced that’s the way Dune, and No Time To Die, should have gone.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, TrevorAnne‡, Mum^, Edithª and Debbiº‚ putting in their answers: with Trevor, Anne and Debbi scoring five out of five, Mum and Olga on four, and Edith on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q1)    6th October is an Anglican feast: that marks the death of William Tyndale.   He famously translated the Bible into which European language?

Q2)    The Thirteen Martyrs of Arad were executed on 6th October, 1849.   During a revolution in what’s now which European country?

Q3)    Exoplanet, 51 Pegasi b was discovered on 6th October, 1995.   It was originally called Bellerophon.   What’s its official name?

Q4)    13th October saw the first sitting of the High Court of Australia.   In which year: 1903, 1904 or 1905?

Q5)    Finally … ?   Basketball player, Michael Jordan retired on 6th October, 1993.   He returned to the game in March of which year?

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)    5th October is World Teacher’s Day.   It was established by UNESCO, when: 1994, 1996 or 1998?

A1)    1994.

Q2)    Teachers usually work in which ‘S’?

A2)    Schools.

Q3)    Teachers teach which ‘P’?

A3)    A pupil: or pupils, if they’re teaching lots of them.   (I’ve included the definitions from both Wiktionary, and the Oxford English Dictionary: they seem functionally identical.   However?   As far as I can tell, you can’t access the OED from outside the UK, unless you’re a subscriber.   You can subscribe to it for free in the UK: if you belong to a library.)

Q4)    Teachers usually help people gain which ‘E’?

A4)    An education.

Q5)    Finally … ?   Teachers usually teach lessons in a group.   A group usually known as which ‘C’?

A5)    A class.   (A class: as distinct from a classroom!)

Here’s a thought …

“Architecture is the masterly, correct and magnificent play of masses brought together in light.”

Le Corbusier, 6 October 1887 – 27 August 1965.

And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Um … it was pupils, Olga … !   At any rate … ?   The film industry’s having a bit of a bad year: as is my street.   At least the upstairs window’s been made safe.   That’s something.   And they’re right: 2020’s rapidly turning into a metaphor.   And a t-shirt!

†        Well … it’s quietened down a bit, Trevor!   Thankfully!   Although I think someone’s drilling.

‡        Morning, Anne!   How’s today?

^        Morning, Mum: you’re being waved at, by Debbi!

ª        There’s not much to tell, Edith.   It’s a Hotpoint I’ve had for years: I think I got it from a local charity that refurbishes white goods, and sells them on cheap.   About the only down side to it is how noisy it is: I can’t watch TV when it’s on!   Ummm …

º        Oh, lord, no, Debbi!   Although the visitor, last week, tried.   My front door is tough!   No, the door that got a kicking was the main door of a neighbouring block of flats.   It’s … well … the emergency glaziers use sticky-backed plastic to keep the glass in!

Q1) English
Q2) Romania
Q3) Dimidium
Q4) 1903, but we’re talking about the 6th of October rather than the 13th. I think you’ve been writing too many of these at the same time (and you made me jump and check my calendar)!
Q5) 1995
As you cannot use which with people, I assumed the P had to refer to something else, although I guess it referred to the letter p rather than to what it applied to (sorry, I’m overthinking things, but I spend so much time checking grammar and preparing English lessons that I can’t switch off). Good news about the window, even if it is only a temporary solution. The cinema situation sounds dire. Here, despite the restrictions, and the fact that sometimes they have reopened and had to close again, the keep going (compulsory mask wearing, limited number of seats occupied, distancing, alcohol gels…). I haven’t been since February, but I am tempted. We shall see.
Unfortunately the class I was going to teach this afternoon was cancelled because the school has decided to send the girl’s class into lockdown as a precautionary measure. The mother told me that the girl is fine, but they prefer to wait until the school gets everything checked and makes sure that children are safe. (I wonder, because the girl had told me one of her friends from school was having her First Communion on Saturday and they’ve invited her to the party. I didn’t think about it until later, but here meetings are supposed to be limited to 6 people, and funerals, weddings, etc., can only go ahead with a very limited number of guests, but… what do I know?)

Oh, dear! How awful. Can you get ear protectors? You still couldn't watch tv, but your hearing would be safe.
Hello, Paul's mum.
